Newcastle United vs Southampton: Match preview
In a summer of big-money signings and many of the sport’s biggest names moving clubs, no transfer caused as much surprise as that of Danny Ings moving to Aston Villa for £30m.
Ings had been a revelation for Southampton since joining from Liverpool, finishing as the club’s top scorer in the league in each of the last 3 seasons, and missed out on the Premier League’s golden boot award by a single goal in 2019/20.
However, at 29-years-old, with a history of serious knee injuries and just 12 months remaining on his existing deal, now proved the perfect time to sell a player whose value is at its peak. Still, while the deal made a lot of financial sense, replacing the club’s main outlet for goals is often a difficult recruitment task to get right.
Adam Armstrong has been brought in from Blackburn for half of the amount received for Ings. He started off strong, too, opening the scoring against Everton on his debut. It remains to be seen, though, whether he can match the output of Ings over a full season.
In contrast, Newcastle look in some trouble this season. After 4 consecutive seasons bouncing around the 44-45 points mark, the margin for error to avoid slipping below 40 points and being in danger of relegation is very slim.
The protracted takeover by a Saudi Investment Fund is still in legal proceedings, which have again been delayed until 2022. This leaves the squad and manager in limbo, with many fans disappointed at the departure of Rafa Benitez and believing Steve Bruce lacks the ability to improve the club’s fortunes in the long term.
They are also in dire need of investment in the playing staff. Squad players Christian Atsu, Yoshinori Muto, Florian Lejeune, Andy Carroll and Henri Saivet all left this summer, with Joe Willock’s loan deal becoming a permanent one marking the only arrival.
The Magpies’ start to this season has been a difficult one, losing both of their opening Premier League games by a 2-goal margin, and being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Burnley in midweek on penalties. While they have had the better of Southampton in recent years, you wouldn’t fancy their chances of getting their first win of the season on Saturday.
Newcastle United team news vs Southampton
Martin Dubravka remains ruled out with an ankle injury which has subsequently gotten infected. He looks likely to miss a significant portion of the start of the season, with best projections suggesting a return to training in November.
Karl Darlow is nearer a return to action than Dubravka, but the club are not yet putting a timeframe on his return to action. Steve Bruce has suggested in prior press conferences that they need to be patient with the shot-stopper, and it could be up to 6 weeks before he is ready to return.
Jonjo Shelvey (above) will be missing for a month due to a calf injury. It isn’t the same calf that he struggled with over pre-season, but the midfielder will still be out until late September with the problem. Joe Willock replaced him in midfield for the trip to Birmingham last weekend and will remain in the side.
However, his partner in midfield, Isaac Hayden, is struggling with a sore knee, which saw him complete just 45 minutes against Villa. Sean Longstaff will come in to replace him in the starting lineup here.
Elliott Anderson is still resting the hip injury that has plagued him over the summer months. No date for a return has provided for Anderson either.
Paul Dummett is back in training this week after a lower leg injury kept him out of the opening 2 games of the season. The Burnley match in midweek came too soon for him but he could be on the bench here.
Southampton team news vs Newcastle United
It is nearly 3 years now since Sam McQueen ruptured his cruciate ligament. Given the length of time he has been out for, it is doubtful he will ever play again at a Premier League level, despite being only 26.
William Smallbone has endured an injury riddled last 2 seasons with the Saints. After picking up a hamstring injury at the start of last season, he injured his knee in his comeback match in January, and hasn’t featured since. Smallbone is nearing a return to action, but is expected to get several reserve matches under his belt before being involved with the first team again.
Stuart Armstrong has missed the last two Saints matches with a lower leg injury. He wasn’t involved in team training as of midweek, and it is unlikely he will feature against the Magpies as a result.
Mohamed Elyounoussi made his first appearance of the season in midweek against Newport, and bagged himself a hat-trick. Will that be enough to relegate one of Moussa Djenepo or Theo Walcott to the bench, though?
