Match preview
Two sides continuing to defy the odds in the battle for European football in the Premier League are set to lock horns at St. James Park on Sunday, January 15th.
The clash in question will see top-4 hopefuls Newcastle United play host to high-flying Fulham.
Starting with the former, Newcastle, of course, are currently in the midst of a season to remember.
Owing to just a solitary defeat from the club’s 18 league outings to date, Eddie Howe’s troops sit 4th in England’s top-flight, a position which would, come the term’s end, prove enough to secure Champions League football.
Not only that, but, should they ultimately emerge triumphant this weekend, then the Magpies will leapfrog Manchester United, to move within a solitary point of 2nd-placed Man City.
Despite such stellar form, though, in their most recent fixture, Newcastle were forced to dig out a bounce-back result.
This came after a stretch of no wins from three, which included a shock FA Cup at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday.
But, this past Tuesday, goals on the part of Dan Burn and Joelinton proved enough to guide the Geordie giants into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, at the expense of Leicester City.

This run of just one victory in four, though, means that it is Fulham who will head into Sunday’s action at St. James’ Park in much the better form of the two sides.
This comes with the capital outfit brimming with confidence, owing to a five-game win streak.
After getting the better of all of Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leicester, Marco Silva and co. marched into the 4th round of the FA Cup last weekend, courtesy of a comfortable downing of Hull City.
And this was followed in midweek by another impressive three-point haul in the Premier League.
In an outing which caught headlines owing to the dismissal of debutant Joao Felix, goals from Willian and Carlos Vinicius guided the Cottagers to a 2-1 triumph over Chelsea.
Should Fulham go on to make it six wins on the trot across all competitions on Sunday evening, then they will, in turn, climb to within a solitary point of their upcoming hosts in the Premier League table.
And yet, we at 101 are nevertheless backing Newcastle to prove just about too much for Marco Silva’s men.
