Manchester United vs Aston Villa match preview

These two teams kick off just six points apart and, if someone had told you that would be the case six months ago, you probably would’ve assumed Manchester United were having a nightmare season.

On the contrary, this is a result of Aston Villa’s excellent form, with the Claret and Blue Army unbeaten in ten matches, winning eight of them.

Unai Emery’s team were victorious again on Tuesday night, with Tyrone Mings’ header downing Fulham at Villa Park.

This leaves the Villans sixth, very much in the hunt to qualify for Europe after 13 years away.

Manchester United meantime occupy fourth spot, knowing a win here would pretty much wrap up a Champions League return.

On Thursday night, the Red Devils led 2-0 at Tottenham, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford the scorers, only for Spurs to fight back in the second half and earn a draw.

Before this though, Erik ten Hag’s team had won three league games on the spin, tightening their grip on fourth, and reached the FA Cup Final, ousting Brighton on penalties.

The reverse fixture was Emery’s first game in charge, with Villa romping to a 3-1 victory.

They also won at Old Trafford last season, their first victory there since 2009, with Villa last winning back-to-back away league games against Man United in 1930.

So, can Emery’s team cause a big upset?

Manchester United team news

Even though both Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane are sideline, Harry Maguire still didn’t start on Thursday, with Luke Shaw partnering Victor Lindelöf at the back.

The back four is set to remain unchanged, featuring Diogo Dalot at left-back and Tyrell Malacia on the bench.

In fact, baring any fatigue issues, Erik ten Hag will probably name an unchanged line-up.

Jadon Sancho’s opener at Spurs should see him keep his place, with Marcus Rashford through the middle and Anthony Martial left on the bench.

Bruno Fernandes hasn’t scored in seven appearances, but has previously netted six in seven meetings with Villa.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelöf, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Sancho, Rashford.

Aston Villa team news

Unai Emery’s team have had 48 hours extra to prepare for this game, so will be hoping that makes the difference as they seek to spring a surprise.

Ashley Young is still going strong at the age of 37 and will face the club he made 261 appearance for.

At the other end of the pitch, Ollie Watkins has been on fire in 2023, having scored 11 goals in his last 14 outings.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): MartĂnez; Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno; Douglas Luiz, Dendoncker, McGinn, BuendĂa, Ramsey; Watkins.
