Manchester City are the Premier League’s Christmas number one so will that translate into them lifting the trophy once again?

Last Sunday, the Citizens demolished Newcastle 4-0 at St James’ Park in one of the most one-sided top-flight games you’re ever likely to see.

Rúben Dias opened the scoring after just five minutes, pouncing on a calamitous error, before João Cancelo doubled their lead from long-range.

In the second half, Riyāḍ Maḥrez made it three before Raheem Sterling rounded off a stroll in the Park with a late tap-in.

This emphatic victory means Pep Guardiola’s men have now won eight successive league games, accumulating 30 points from the last 33 available.

So, the Sky Blues are currently three points above Liverpool and six clear of Chelsea.

Historically, Man City are unbeaten in their last eight home league games on Boxing Day, winning the last six in a row.

Their last home defeat on 26 December came way back in 1996, a 1-0 loss to Port Vale at Maine Road.

They would go on to finish 14th in the second-tier that season, sandwiched in between Norwich and Charlton Athletic.

Safe to say times have changed in East Manchester.

Will the league-leader’s winning run continue?

Can Leicester cause an upset?

Leicester City meanwhile make the 109 mile journey north up the M1 in hope rather than expectation.

The Foxes have only ever won one of 11 Premier League fixtures on Boxing Day, losing eight.

Although, that sole victory did come against Manchester City in 2018; Ricardo Pereira’s late strike securing a memorable 2-1 home victory.

This season though, after two fantastic campaigns, Brendan Rodgers’ side have not been able to live up to their own high standards.

Although, their last league outing was a spectacular one as they, just like their hosts would do a week later, demolished Newcastle United 4-0.

However, this means the Foxes are down in ninth place having only won two of their last seven Premier League games.

Since then, their fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton have been postponed.

But, they have still been busy in December, crashing out of two cup competitions.

First, they were beaten 3-2 by Napoli at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, therefore dropping down to third in their Europa League group.

So, they now find themselves in the UEFA Europa Conference League first knockout round and will face Danish Cup winners Randers.

More recently, on Wednesday night in fact, the Foxes took on Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

In a frantic first half, Jamie Vardy scored twice in four minutes to put them 2-0 up before a superb James Maddison strike restored the two goal cushion.

However, Liverpool got it back to 3-2 before then equalising in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

In the subsequent shootout, both Luke Thomas and Ryan Bertrand were denied by Caoimhín Kelleher as Liverpool reached the last four.

All in all, it’s not been a great campaign for Leicester but it is far from unsalvageable.

They’ve already met Manchester City twice this season with both meetings finishing 1-0.

First, in the FA Community Shield at Wembley, Kelechi Ịheanachọ smashed home an 89th minute penalty.

This saw Leicester win that competition for the first time in 50 years.

35 days later, Bernardo Silva got the only goal as the champions beat the FA Cup winners at the King Power.

Which city will prevail this time?

Ahead of this one, Pep Guardiola’s team have enjoyed a rare week off, their first since August.

So, even though Guardiola famously likes to rotate his XI, this might no be the case so much here.

Ederson will make his 215th appearance for the club in goal, looking for his 106th clean sheet; ridiculous figures.

At the back, Kyle Walker hasn’t featured since being sent off against RB Leipzig, missing last weekend’s win due to illness.

If he’s not back, João Cancelo will continue at right-back with forgotten man Oleksandr Zinchenko on the left.

In the middle, Rúben Dias and Aymeric Laporte remain the first-choice duo with John Stones and Nathan Aké in reserve.

Rodri could continue at the base of midfield with Bernardo Silva, who got the winner at Leicester, and fit again Kevin De Bruyne further forward.

In attack, after scoring at St James’ Park, Riyāḍ Maḥrez and Raheem Sterling are likely to keep their places out-wide, supporting Gabriel Jesus.

This could be Maḥrez’s last match before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Algeria, who are defending champions, begin their title defence against Sierra Leone on 11 January.

Sterling meanwhile has scored in three consecutive Premier League matches, last netting in four in a row in September 2017.

If this is the XI, a star-studded bench will include Fernandinho, İlkay Gündoğan, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish.

Will Manchester City’s winning streak continue?

As for Leicester City, they’ve had far less time to prepare and did name a strong side for Wednesday’s defeat at Anfield.

Kasper Schmeichel made a rare League Cup appearance on Wednesday and will continue in goal here.

In defence, they’re so short of central defenders that Wilfred Ndidi had to fill in there in midweek.

But, out of favour Jannik Vestergaard could start alongside Çağlar Söyüncü with Jonny Evans currently out.

This would see Ndidi return to midfield, alongside Boubakary Soumaré and Youri Tielemans, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall making way.

Despite his recent good form, James Maddison could be on the bench with hard-working wide players Ayoze Pérez and Marc Albrighton getting the nod.

Ademola Lookman is the other option; Harvey Barnes is a doubt having missed Wednesday’s match.

In attack, Jamie Vardy is likely to lead the line.

He has scored eight times against Manchester City in the past, including two hat-tricks, but has never scored in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Patson Daka and Kelechi Ịheanachọ, who started his senior career at Man City, will be on the bench.

Can this depleted side cause an upset?
