Liverpool vs Aston Villa match preview

After claiming a famous, come-from-behind victory last Sunday at St James’ Park, will Liverpool keep their unbeaten streak going?

Safe to say, half an hour into their trip to Newcastle, things were not going to plan for the Reds, who found themselves 1-0 down and a man down, with Virgil van Dijk having been shown a straight red card.

That’s how the scoreline remained until, with just ten minutes to go, Darwin Núñez made himself the hero, equalising emphatically before snatching all three points with a near-identical goal in stoppage time.

So, against the odds, Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the campaign continues, with Jürgen Klopp’s team now undefeated in 14 Premier League matches, dating back to April Fool’s Day, the longes sequence in the division.

Ahead of the international break, can the Reds take their tally to ten points?

This though will be a tough test, given that Aston Villa also come into this one following back-to-back league wins.

A week earlier, Unai Emery’s team also demolished Everton 4-0 at Villa Park, while they’ve also made progress in the Europa Conference League.

The Claret and Blue Army steamrollered Hibs 8-0 in the play-off round, so now have group games against Legia Warszawa, HŠK Zrinjski Mostar and AZ Alkmaar to look forward to.

Villa did earn a 1-1 draw at Anfield towards the end of last season, ending a streak of four successive defeats on the red half of Merseyside.

So now, can Emery lead Aston Villa to their first away win over Liverpool since 2014?

Liverpool team news

Liverpool made their fourth midfield signing of the summer on deadline day, with Ryan Gravenberch swapping Munich for Merseyside.

He could debut less than 48 hours after arriving, although the same trio as last Sunday, who are all also new signings, of Wataru Endō, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister could be in from the start.

At the back, captain Virgil van Dijk is suspended, it’s not yet known how long for, and with Ibrahima Konaté a doubt, Joe Gomez could partner Joël Matip.

Last weekend’s hero Darwin Núñez will also be hoping to come into the XI, possibly at the expense of Mohamed Salah, after Liverpool rejected a £150 million from Al-Ittihad.

The Saudi window is still open, so that saga isn’t over just yet.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk, Konaté, Robertson; Endō, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Luis Díaz.

Aston Villa team news

Having won the first leg 5-0 in Edinburgh, Unai Emery made six changes for Thursday’s comfortable home win over Hibs.

Unusually, Emery switched to a back three at Turf Moor last Sunday, so it’ll be interesting to se if that was a one-off.

Emi Martínez hasn’t featured since going off injured at half time against Hibernian ten days ago, so Robin Olsen will continue to deputise.

Clément Lenglet came in on loan from Barcelona on Friday, bolstering centre-back options after Tyrone Mings suffered a long-term knee injury.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): Olsen; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Douglas Luiz, Kamara, McGinn; Diaby, Watkins, Bailey.
