Betting prediction: Leicester City 1 – 1 Chelsea

Leicester City welcomes Chelsea to the King Power Stadium on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Blues have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 15 wins to Leicester City’s 6, from their 30 encounters in the Premier League.

This rings true when you look back at all competitions, with Chelsea winning 58 matches to the Foxes’ 28 since they faced each other for the first time in Division Two back in 1905.

However, Leicester have had the better of things in the three previous encounters between them in 2021, winning 2 of the 3 matches. Of course, the most notable of those matches was the Foxes’ victory in the 2021 FA Cup final back in May.

Leicester City vs Chelsea: Recommended bets

Both sides drew their final matches prior to the international break 1-1. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of Leicester 1 – 1 Chelsea is available at odds of 7.5/1.

1-0 Leicester win. Leicester prevented Chelsea from having a cup-double last season, beating them 1-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley back in May. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 15/1.

1-2 Chelsea win. Chelsea won 2-1 at home the last time these sides faced each other, just 3 days after the FA Cup final. You can back them at 9.5/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Under 2.5 goals. That 2-1 Chelsea win was only the second time in the last 8 encounters between them, in all competitions, that the match finished with over 2.5 goals. You can back a return to low scoring games between the sides here on Saturday with odds of 1.9/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Kai Havertz Goalscorer. With Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both out injured, the burden of goals has fallen on Kai Havertz (below) lately. The German international has been the game’s first goalscorer in 2 of Chelsea’s last 3 domestic games. Although, in both instances, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Regardless, Havertz is the 6/1 favourite to score the game’s opener once again on Saturday. Or 2.6/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Leicester.

Leicester City vs Chelsea: Match preview

It would be ridiculous to call this match a title decider. Although, the clash is perfectly placed to cement Chelsea in top spot in the league should they win this difficult fixture while already commanding a 3-point lead over favourites Manchester City.

The fixture also comes at a good time with Leicester struggling at the moment, having gone 3 games without a win in all competitions. Is the sub-plot Brendan Rodgers ‘doing another Celtic’ and bailing midway through the season when a job he likes more gets offered to him?

All the talk surrounding Leicester and Rodgers during the international break centered on a potential move to Manchester United to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Suggestions that Rodgers is already house-hunting in Cheshire in preparation for the move and which players he would like to bring with him in January have filled the gossip sections in various papers.

Does this really have any impact on the performances of the players, though? Are they aware of this uncertainty surrounding their manager or are they professionals who maintain complete focus on the task at hand; preparing themselves for the next match and delivering elite performances?

The game against Arsenal, which is their only defeat in the last 6 league matches, actually wasn’t a poor performance in terms of the underlying numbers. They fell behind early from a set-piece and could never get back into the game.

Leicester created the game’s best chances, though, as the expected goals of 2.0 to 1.1 in their favour highlights. Ultimately, they found Aaron Ramsdale in spectacular form making 8 saves, including 2 big chances and a flying free-kick stop that went viral on social media.

Football, more than perhaps any other sport, is a victim of variance. Goals are extremely rare in the sport and yet define everything. A shot is saved rather than resulting in a goal and the entire narrative will change. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s late winner against Munich, Liverpool in Istanbul, the ball crossing the line or not in 1966.

History is written by the victor. Books, articles and blogs span from the result. The narrative is decided and then information is searched out to support it.

That is why football is a ‘results business’. With the passage of time, the ‘how’ doesn’t matter too much. Chelsea need to win this match on Saturday. It will cement the narrative of Tuchel’s machine marching on the league title at least 3 points clear.

A defeat would spawn a different narrative. One of Chelsea being reeled in by Manchester City and Liverpool.

Leicester City team news vs Chelsea

Leicester still have 5 players on the long-term injury list.

Ryan Bertrand is the newest addition to the list, having suffered a knee injury. While no time frame has been provided as of yet, he is ruled out for the weekend.

Bertrand joins fellow defender Wesley Fofana, who suffered a broken leg in pre-season, ruling him out of action until 2022.

James Justin is on the long road back from an ACL injury. He has been pictured in training with Fofana and is expected to be available for matches near to Christmas, if not sooner.

Nampalys Mendy is yet to feature for Leicester this season due to a groin injury. No timeframe for his return has been provided yet by the club.

Marc Albrighton hasn’t played for Leicester since suffering a horrendous challenge in Moscow. He should be nearing a return, though, and will be monitored from game to game.

Youri Tielemans’ situation sounds positive. The ever-present midfielder had a sore calf after the 1-1 draw with Leeds. However, it doesn’t appear to be serious and he is in contention for a place here pending the outcome of a late fitness test.

Should Tielemans not recover in time, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Hamza Choudhury and James Maddison will all be in contention to replace him in the starting XI.

Chelsea team news vs Leicester City

The international break may have come at a good time for Chelsea. The two weeks since their last game could be enough to get some of their key players back on the pitch.

Romelu Lukaku has missed the last 3 games after twisting his ankle against Malmo. He faces a fitness test to be involved here.

Mason Mount (above) missed out on England duty this time around after having his wisdom teeth extracted. It is expected that the international break provided enough time resting up to be back in contention here for Chelsea.

Marcos Alonso is another to have suffered an injury against Malmo. Like Lukaku, he is nearing a return to action on Saturday. Although, it is unlikely he will displace Ben Chilwell from the starting XI.

Timo Werner was also injured against Malmo, suffering a hamstring strain just before half-time. Unlike Lukaku and Alonso, this match comes too soon for him and he is expected to need further time to fully recover.

Mateo Kovacic injured his hamstring in training and has missed the Blues’ last 2 league games as a result. Like Werner, he will probably be out for a little longer still. Saúl Ñíguez, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley will be looking to stake a claim for a rare start in the league as a result.
