Crystal Palace vs Chelsea: Match preview

More than a quarter of each London-based Premier League club’s matches this season are London derbies. Although, it seems only the matches involving Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs are given the derby treatment in the media.

Chelsea have played in the fewest derbies of the Premier League’s London-based clubs this season, but have the best record so far. Their 4 wins, a draw and a defeat has seen them pick up 2.17 points per game (PPG) and also sit on a goal difference of 7 from these match; higher than any other club.

In contrast, Crystal Palace have only managed 1 win from their 8 London derbies so far this season. They have just 7 points from 8 matches (or 0.88 PPG) and have a goal difference of -7. Only Fulham have a worse record than the Eagles.

The Blues’ crushing 2-5 defeat last weekend was their first of the Thomas Tuchel era, bringing to an end a run of 15 games undefeated in all competitions. With Chelsea being in the middle of an run of 8 games in a 22-day period, Tuchel is expected to rotate his squad here.

If they drop below their normal levels as they did last weekend, distracted by the prospect of winning the Champions League or FA Cup, Roy Hodgson’s boys will fancy their chances of landing another blow on their hopes of finishing in the top-4.

However, results between these sides since Roy has taken charge of Palace suggest it is a fixture he struggles with. They have lost the last 6 matches against Chelsea, failing to score in 3 of those matches.

This all suggests a comfortable win for Chelsea.

Crystal Palace team news vs Chelsea

Michy Batshuayi is unavailable for selection on Saturday due to the Premier League’s loan rules preventing players on loan from facing the parent club.

Mamadou Sakho has missed most of the season due to injury. He was last named in a matchday squad on January 2nd and last made an appearance on the pitch back in October. He is currently out with a strain in his left thigh.

James Tomkins will also miss out due to a fractured eye socket. He had surgery back in January to take care of the injury sustained in training and the club will rightly be extra cautious in bringing him back into first team action.

James McArthur has missed Palace’s last 10 games due to a lower leg injury. While he is nearing a return to action, he is unlikely to be involved until later this month.

Nathan Ferguson has yet to make an appearance for Palace this season due to knee and thigh injuries. He has now back in training but is likely several weeks and possibly some reserve team appearances away from a return to Premier League football.

Nathaniel Clyne has been out since the 0-3 defeat to Burnley in mid-February. He is nearing a return to action and could take a place on the bench for this game.

James McCarthy has missed Palace’s last 3 games due to a groin strain. Like Clyne, he is rated 50/50 for Saturday and could make an appearance from the bench.

Chelsea team news vs Crystal Palace

Charly Musonda Jr. is Chelsea’s only long-term injury concern. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder was ruled out for the season after undergoing knee surgery in the summer.

Thiago Silva is suspended for the trip to Selhurst Park following his sending off last weekend against West Brom. Thankfully for Chelsea, he will only miss 1 match and will be available for selection against Manchester City in the FA Cup next weekend.

Tammy Abraham has missed the last 5 Premier League matches with an ankle problem. However, he was an unused substitute against Porto in midweek. It is likely he will be involved on Saturday and may even be a surprise starter as Tuchel looks to keep his squad fresh for upcoming games against Porto and Manchester City.

Having started back-to-back games now, midfield duo Jorginho and Kovacic will need to be rotated with Chelsea’s busy schedule in mind. N’Golo Kanté will come into the side.
