Crystal Palace vs Arsenal match preview

Following a less than convincing victory on the opening day, will Arsenal pick up maximum points in this London derby?

The Gunners looked set to demolish Nottingham Forest on the opening Saturday of the season, racing into a 2-0 first half lead.

Eddie Nketiah breaking the deadlock, having been teed-up by Gabriel Martinelli’s roulette, before Bukayo Saka lashed home an absolute rocket from the edge of the area.

But, Mikel Arteta’s team failed to kill Forest off, with the visitors pulling one back with just eight minutes to play, setting up a grand-stand finish, but Arsenal did hold on for a valuable three points.

As the Gunners target another victory here, they’ll surely need to put in an improved performance.

Crystal Palace meantime were also victorious last Saturday, with Odsonne Édouard’s first-time strike enough to down Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Arsenal have lost just two of their last 20 visits to Selhurst Park, dating back 44 years, both defeats coming on Monday nights and ending 3-0, these occurring in April 2017 and April 2022.

So, will Palace enjoy another Monday night London derby victory, or will Arsenal return from SE25 with all three points?

Crystal Palace team news

This time last week, star winger Michael Olise looked Chelsea-bound, but instead signed a new contract at Crystal Palace, although he won’t feature here, as he’s still nursing an injury.

Jefferson Lerma made his Palace debut at Bramall Lane, so will continue alongside Cheick Doucouré in midfield.

Sam Johnstone will be in goal, having usurped Vicente Guaita as number one, while Odsonne Édouard’s winner last weekend will see him keep his place up front.

Teenager Matheus França will be hoping to make his debut, having arrived from Flamengo.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Johnstone; Ward, Andersen, Guéhi, Mitchell; Lerma, Doucouré, Schlupp; Ayew, Eze, Édouard.

Arsenal team news

Jurriën Timber, who’s only just arrived, suffered an ACL injury on his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest, meaning his season may heartbreakingly be over already.

So, could Oleksandr Zinchenko return at left-back, thereby making his first appearance since Easter Sunday?

Mikel Arteta deployed Thomas Partey at right-back on Saturday, an experiment that is yet to bear fruits, but surely Gabriel will return here, with Benjamin White returning to the right.

If Partey returns to a more conventional midfield role, alongside Declan Rice, Kai Havertz could be the man to make way.

With Gabriel Jesus also sidelined, Eddie Nketiah will lead the line, seeking his first Premier League goal away from home since New Years’ Eve.

In goal, David Raya has now arrived from Brentford, but he won’t come straight in for Aaron Ramsdale will here?

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Rice, Partey, Ødegaard; Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli.
