Betting prediction: Chelsea 2 – 1 Manchester United

Chelsea welcomes Manchester United to Stamford Bridge in London on Sunday for this Premier League match.

The Blues have the narrowest of upper hands in the head-to-head, with 18 wins to Manchester United’s 17, from their 58 encounters in the Premier League.

Looking at the full record between the two clubs since they first faced each other competitively in 1905, United come out on top with 81 wins to 55.

The Blues have won just 1 of the last 9 matches between them, in all competitions. They are also on a 7-game winless run in this head-to-head with 3 defeats and 4 draws from the last 7 league games.

Chelsea vs Manchester United: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Chelsea 2 – 1 Manchester United is available at odds of 9/1.

0-0 draw. Both matches between these sides last season were bore-draws. Odds of 13/1 are available if you see this match being another Stamford Bridge snoozefest.

0-2 Manchester United win. The last time Manchester United visited a packed Stamford Bridge pre-COVID, they were 0-2 winners against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea. Odds of 34/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

Under 2.5 goals. Chelsea vs Manchester United in the Premier League is often a low scoring game with 10 of the last 14 matches producing under 2.5 goal games. You can back another low scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 2.2/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Timo Werner Goalscorer. Werner’s goalscoring cameo in midweek as Juve were dismantled 4-0 was a welcome sight. The German international hasn’t played any league minutes for Chelsea since the 0-1 win at Brentford 6 weeks ago but he is expected to feature here from the start after recovering from his hamstring injury. Werner (above) is 7/1 to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 2.75/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Manchester United.

The Blues are 1.55/1 to end their 7-league game winless run in this head-to-head by taking all 3 points from Manchester United on Sunday.

Whereas, the Red Devils are 6/1 to make it 4 wins in 5 visits to Stamford Bridge with an away win here.

Odds of 4/1 are available if you see Chelsea and Manchester United continuing the trend of draws between them from last season by cancelling each other out on Sunday.

Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match preview

Often the fear of losing a big match against a rival means an anticlimax when the actual game takes place. Matches are hyped up by the media, with a random classic match between them being shown to bring back memories of a high-scoring, free-flowing open game.

In truth though, in games like this all that matters is the result. Points on the board for the manager and bragging rights for the fans. Not losing often supersedes winning as the big motivator for manager and players alike; nobody wants to lose a big game.

This can often produce overly cautious games in which the early ‘feeling each other out’ period never evolves into an open game where teams take turns in launching forward in attack to try and score. Historically, Chelsea versus United often falls into this category.

While both teams have a recent 4-0 home win to recall, often these games are low-scoring, cagey and end in a draw. In fact, since the start of the 2013/14 season when they met in the 2nd game of the season, the sides have drawn 8 of their 16 league matches between them. Half of those draws finished 0-0, including both matches between them last season.

Nobody wishes to see another 0-0 game here. However, it would also be no surprise if Tuchel approached this game with some caution fearing the lift teams get when a manager is replaced. Likewise, for United, a point away to Chelsea given where the two teams are at right now would be a fantastic result.

However, after 4 straight games of creating chances worth 2+ expected goals, and dismantling Italian giants Juve in midweek 4-0, the expectation will be for the league leaders to run riot on United also.

Perhaps this will be the perfect game for Chelsea to catch United, prior to Ralf Rangnick properly taking charge of the club. A chance to put hands on a club that has been taking a lot of big hits recently before a manager with new ideas can come in and solve some of their problems.

LONDON, ENGLAND – FEBRUARY 17: N’Golo Kante of Chelsea leaves the pitch following an injury during the Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on February 17, 2020 in London, United Kingdom. (Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images)

Chelsea team news vs Manchester United

The big news this week at Chelsea was the injury to Ben Chilwell. Chilwell was subbed off with 20 minutes to go against Juve with a potential ACL injury. Scans later revealed a partial tear of his ACL and the club have decided to allow six weeks to see if he recovers or if he will need surgery. Marcos Alonso is expected to replace Chilwell in the starting XI for the next six weeks and beyond if required.

N’Golo Kante (above) is also out having twisted his knee against Juventus. Unlike Chilwell, he isn’t expected to be out for long and could make the squad here. Although, Tuchel described the potential of him doing so as being “almost a miracle if he makes it.” Ruben Loftus-Cheek is expected to replace him.

Kai Havertz is also likely out after suffering a hamstring problem last weekend. He was removed an hour into the 0-3 win at Leicester but isn’t expected to be out for long and has a small chance of making the bench here.

Mateo Kovacic has missed Chelsea’s last 3 league matches with a hamstring problem. He isn’t expected to be available this weekend and it could still be a few games before he is fit to return.

Romelu Lukaku has missed the last 4 league games after twisting his ankle against Malmo. He was an unused substitute against Juve in midweek though and is expected to get some cameo minutes here against his former club.

Manchester United team news vs Chelsea

Harry Maguire (above) is suspended for this match following his red card against Watford last weekend.

Mason Greenwood is also out having tested positive for COVID.

Pogba suffered a quadriceps strain while hitting a volley during a training drill with the France national team during the break. This is expected to rule him out for up to 2 months.

Tahith Chong is also on the long-term injury list following groin surgery. He isn’t expected to return to the pitch until at least March 2022.

Raphael Varane remains ruled out with a hamstring injury after being forced off in the first half of the match against Atalanta. He is expected back in early December.

Edinson Cavani has been suffering from an irritated tendon on and off since pre-season. He faces a fitness test to be involved here. It is likely another week or so before he is ready though.

Luke Shaw was forced off against City with a head injury and subsequently missed out on England duty due to concussion protocols. He returned against Watford where he once again suffered a head injury. The fear of damage from repeated head trauma suggests he may be given time to fully rest and cover. Alex Telles will continue at left-back as he did on Tuesday.

Fred twisted his ankle but managed to complete the game against Villareal. He faces a late fitness test to continue in midfield here. Donny van de Beek or Nemanja Matic will partner McTominay in his absence if required.
