Brighton & Hove Albion vs Wolverhampton Wanderers match preview

This is the fixture in Premier League history with the most characters in its name (49), but will the 22 characters on the pitch serve up a memorable encounter?

Brighton & Hove Albion will be desperate to get back on track, having suffered two disappointing defeats this week.

Last Sunday, the Seagulls missed out on just a second-ever FA Cup Final appearance, ousted by Manchester United on penalties following a goalless draw at Wembley.

Then, in mid-week, despite taking the lead through Facundo Buonanotte, they were beaten 3-1 at the City Ground, with Pascal Groß’s unfortunate own goal kick-starting Nottingham Forest’s comeback.

This saw Roberto De Zerbi’s team slip out of the European spots, four points below Liverpool with two games in hand, while five points adrift Aston Villa having played three games less.

Given that they’ve played the fewest matches of any team in the division, Brighton’s destiny is in their own hands, but this feels must win if they’re going to qualify for Europe for the very first time.

A freak own goal broke the deadlock in the third minute, before Rúben Neves secured the win with a penalty deep into stoppage time.

So, having won three successive home games, Julen Lopetegui’s team are eight points clear of danger, all but mathematically safe.

Outside the Black County, Wolves have won just twice all season, beating Everton on Boxing Day, in Lopetegui’s first game, and then Southampton in February.

Brighton meantime won both meetings in 2022, 3-2 and 3-0, so a home win at the Amex seems likely.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news

Roberto De Zerbi rotated a bit for Wednesday’s trip to Nottingham, given that his team had played 120 minutes just three days earlier.

This saw 18 year old Facundo Buonanotte given his full Premier League debut and, having scored, he may have done enough to warrant another start.

Jason Steele saved a penalty just 11 minutes into that game, so is set to remain in goal, chosen over Robert Sánchez.

Adam Webster and Danny Welbeck could return to the XI, the latter deputising up front for the injured Evan Ferguson.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Steele; Groß, Dunk, Webster, Estupiñán; Caicedo, Mac Allister, Buonanotte, March, Mitoma; Welbeck.

Wolverhampton Wanderers team news

Julen Lopetegui will deploy a 4-4-2 for a fifth game running, having won three of the previous four.

Rúben Neves returned to midfield in mid-week, having not started three successive games, suspended for two and then not chosen at Leicester last Saturday.

With Jonny and Rayan Aït-Nouri sidelined, Hugo Bueno got the nod at left-back in mid-week, but Toti could fill-in there this time.

Pablo Sarabia will be hoping to return out-wide, in place of Hwang Hee-chan, while Diego Costa will continue to lead the line.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): José Sá; Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Toti; Lemina, Neves, Nunes, Sarabia; Diego Costa, Cunha.
