Brentford vs West Ham United match preview

Will this turn out to be West Ham United’s best season for a generation?

Last Sunday night, the Hammers beat Manchester United 1-0, thanks to Saïd Benrahma’s rather tame shot mid-way through the first half.

This was a crucial victory for David Moyes’ men, as it moves them onto 37 points, all but securing safety.

Thus, the Irons can therefore focus fully on their Europa Conference League campaign, taking on AZ in the semi-final first leg last Thursday.

Against the odds, it was the Dutch side who struck first in East London, breaking the deadlock from long-range on the cusp of half time.

Nevertheless, mid-way through the second 45, Jarrod Bowen was brought down, with Benrahma lashing home the subsequent penalty, before Michail Antonio bundled home the winner late on.

Given that the away team’s focus will be elsewhere, Brentford will very much fancy their chances of a victory.

Last weekend, the Bees’ European hopes pretty much came to an end, narrowly beaten 1-0 by Liverpool at Anfield.

Before that, Thomas Frank’s team had enjoyed back-to-back wins, beating both Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, so remain ninth, two points clear of fierce rivals Fulham.

Bizarrely, Brentford have won all three Premier League meetings with West Ham, although their last clash, coming in the FA Cup, produced a 1-0 victory for the Irons in West London back in January.

This time, a home win at the Brentford Community Stadium seems likely.

Brentford team news

Thomas Frank switched to a back five last weekend at Anfield, something he does a lot for tougher games, but Mathias Jørgensen is set to be back on the bench for this one.

This’ll see Kevin Schade return to attack, alongside Bryan Mbuemo and top-scorer Ivan Toney.

With Christian Nørgaard out injured, there’s a spot in midfield up for grabs, alongside Mathias Jensen and Vitaly Janelt.

Frank Onyeka, somewhat surprisingly, got the nod against Liverpool, but Josh Dasvila, who scored a stoppage time winner in their most-recent home game, could complete the trio this time.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Hickey, Pinnock, Mee, Henry; Dasilva, Jensen, Janelt; Mbuemo, Schade, Toney.

West Ham United team news

With safety all but mathematically secured, and that huge trip to the Netherlands to come, expect David Moyes to heavily rotate.

Alphonse Areola is the European goalkeeper, so Łukasz Fabiański will be back in here.

Ben Johnson, Emerson, Flynn Downes, Manuel Lanzini and Maxwel Cornet, who were all unused substitutes in mid-week, all seem likely to come in.

Angelo Ogbonna and Vladimír Coufal are both doubts though, which could leave them short of defensive options.

In attack, Gianluca Scamacca is out so Danny Ings will lead the line, having scored a brace against Brentford earlier this season while he was still at Aston Villa.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Fabiański; Johnson, Aguerd, Ogbonna, Emerson; Rice, Downes, Lanzini, Fornals, Cornet, Ings.
