Why Raphael Varane is benched & Harry Maguire is missing for Manchester United vs Leicester

Manchester United host Leicester City at Old Trafford shortly.

Manchester United head into the game looking to once again move to within five points of 1st-place Arsenal, who will also have a game in hand on United come the end of Sunday.

As a result, a loss vs Leicester could see Manchester United’s small title hopes go up in smoke this weekend.

However, despite this being a big game for the Red Devils, Erik ten Hag has made a few changes to his XI, with Victor Lindelof coming in for Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho being dropped to the bench.

Harry Maguire is also missing from the matchday squad, with an explanation for that, as well an insight into why Varane was benched, provided below by the Manchester Evening News.

As per the MEN: “That’s a pretty no-nonsense United side, as Rich Fay put it, despite five changes. Maguire isn’t involved whatsoever as he has a knee injury but it is not thought to be serious.

“Sancho’s removal is unsurprising and Varane has been managed carefully by Ten Hag all season, even if it did cost United against Brighton and Brentford in August. Varane has to start both games next week so it is somewhat logical to put him on the bench for this one.”
