Wayne Rooney tips Manchester United star to have ‘big say’ on England’s World Cup

Wayne Rooney believes one Manchester United star could have a major impact on England’s World Cup chances.

The player in question is Marcus Rashford.

Rashford had a rough few seasons at Manchester United but his form is now turning around.

He has scored eight and assisted three for the Red Devils this season and that was enough for him to regain a spot in the England set-up this winter.

Whether or not Gareth Southgate starts Rashford over the likes of Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka remains to be seen, but Rooney believes Rashford could be key for the Three Lions.

When asked which players could surprise us at the World Cup, Rooney said: “I still think Marcus Rashford could have a big say. He has come into a bit of form at United. I’ve been interested to see how Wales’s Brennan Johnson has stepped up to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest. I think the group might allow one of Wales or USA the chance to get to the quarter-finals. Johnson could do well.”

Elsewhere, Rooney is looking forward to watching Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire:

“He hasn’t had much protection and it is no coincidence that now there is more stability in the middle of the pitch with Casemiro, United’s defenders are playing better. With England, he has always had that protection.”
