Where Chelsea are expected to strengthen in 2023

An insight into Chelsea’s transfer plans for 2023 has been provided.

Chelsea had an active deadline day that included Marcos Alonso making the switch to FC Barcelona.

On the incoming front, meanwhile, Denis Zakaria joined Chelsea on loan from Juventus for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, whilst Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a permanent switch from FC Barcelona.

Chelsea also signed Wesley Fofana Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Gabriel Slonina and Cesare Casadei this summer.

All of those signings meant that Chelsea spent the most money of any club in Premier League history during the 2022 summer transfer window, with a total spend of £278.4m.

However, it is fair to say that Chelsea are not the finished article, and could still do with some fresh legs in certain areas of the pitch.

One of those positions is central midfield, where Chelsea have an injury-prone N’Golo Kante and an ageing Jorginho.

Even if they both stay, though, it is obvious Chelsea need to add another defensive midfield to their ranks.

And now, Fabrizio Romano has tipped Chelsea to strengthen in midfield next year:

“In my personal opinion, they need some energy and freshness in the midfield,” Romano said.

“It’s important to understand what’s gonna happen with Kante and Jorginho’s contracts; I think they will focus on a new midfielder in 2023.

“Now it will take some time to understand Freund and Potter’s priorities.”
