The latest on Liverpool & Chelsea’s pursuit of £50m star

An update on a major transfer has been provided on Sunday.

The player in question is Southampton’s Romeo Lavia. Liverpool have been linked heavily with the Belgian in recent weeks as they look to complete their midfield rebuild.

Alexis Mac Alister and Dominik Szoboszlai were early additions through the door at Anfield this summer and both should improve the Reds’ midfield.

However, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho potentially heading to Saudi Arabia this summer, Liverpool may need a third midfielder, and preferably one who can operate in the deepest role of Liverpool’s three-man midfield. And as Szoboszlai and Mac Alister are not really known for this, it makes sense for Liverpool to be targeting the recently-relegated Lavia.

However, Chelsea, who have lost N’Golo Kante, Matteo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer, are also being linked with a move for the Belgian.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the midfielder:

“Jordan Henderson to Al Ettifaq is now almost a done deal – a verbal agreement was already in place and I can now also confirm that the player did his medical on Friday night. The deal will be signed next week, so it’s almost completed – Henderson will is leaving Liverpool,” Romano said.

“Jurgen Klopp has hinted that things will happen before the end of the summer, and while it’s impossible to predict the exact number of signings, Liverpool will be busy for sure, it just depends on opportunities.

“Chelsea are also following the Lavia situation due to the connection with Joe Shields, one of the Chelsea directors, but it’s not linked to the Moises Caicedo deal. Caicedo remains the priority for Chelsea, but Shields had Lavia at Southampton and Manchester City, so he knows the player well and there is a good connection there.”
