Manchester United weighing up move for Atalanta defender

Manchester United are weighing up a move for Atalanta defender Merih Demiral, according to reports.

Merih Demiral made the switch to Juventus in the summer of 2019. The Italian giants are believed to have paid around £16m for the centre-back’s services.

And given how impressive the no-nonsense defender had been prior to his Juve switch, the Serie A powerhouse appeared to have bagged themselves a real up-and-coming star for a fairly low fee.

But after leaving Sassuolo for Juve, Demiral found his game-time fairly limited in Turin.

As a result, it was not at all surprising to see Juventus loan the Turk to Atalanta, who were in need of a new centre-back as Cristian Romero was leaving for Tottenham in the 2021 summer transfer window.

And though Demiral has since fitted seamlessly into Atalanta’s backline, it appears as though they could be set to cash in on the Turkish star as soon as they buy him, much like La Dea did with Romero who also came from Juventus.

Manchester United eye Demiral

According to Goal, citing Fanatik, Manchester United are interested in Demiral, and are weighing up a summer bid for the 24-year-old.

Demiral has appeared in 31 games in all competitions for Atalanta so far this season, including two against United in the Champions League group stages, the first of which he managed to grab a goal in, en route to a 3-2 defeat.

No potential fee is mentioned in the report, but given his impressive form, it is likely to come in at more than the €25m that the Italian outfit are expected to pay Juventus.
