Manchester United’s rather embarrassing pursuit of Frenkie de Jong is well documented at this point.
The Netherlands international clearly has zero interest in signing for United, with reports claiming he is put off by the city and the badly run nature of the club.
However, FC Barcelona are seemingly keen to move De Jong on this summer so they can afford to register all of their new signings.
But with the Premier League season just around the corner, a move for De Jong, who is said to be a major target of Erik ten Hag’s, is nowhere close to being done.
As a result, Manchester United look to be eyeing some alternative targets – something they probably should have done a while ago.
Regardless, according to the Sun, Ten Hag had been eager to bring in Frenkie de Jong, however, the Dutchman does not want to make the switch. But Man United officials are still eager to add a new midfielder to their ranks, and they could finally be onto a breakthrough with Fabian Ruiz open to the prospect of leaving Napoli.
It is understood that the Spaniard had another meeting with Napoli chiefs on Saturday, but the two parties could not agree terms for a new deal.
As a result, Ruiz could be available for a cut-price fee, with a figure of £26m touted.
But whilst the Red Devils are considering a formal offer, Real Madrid are also monitoring the midfielder’s situation.
Madrid though, want to sign the midfielder for free next year when his contract runs out, whereas United chiefs have already approached Ruiz’s representatives to discuss the possibility of a deal.
