Newcastle, who have already added AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali as well as Odense BK youngster Yankuba Minteh into the fold along Tyneside, have been expected to look for a new first-choice left-sided attacker given the strong possibility that French winger Allan Saint-Maximin could depart St. James’ Park this summer in the wake of interest from continental clubs as well as the big four of the Roshn Saudi League.

The Magpies will part was with £38m for Barnes, who joins James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur), Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa), and other notable names from the Leicester senior setup that sought to leave this summer.

Upon returning to the Champions League for the first time in twenty years, considerable business was always expected to be undertaken by the club, with names as big as Napoli and Georgian international star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia being linked with interest from the PIF-backed outfit, but with a deal for Barnes being struck, the club can turn attention to other parts of the pitch to source further upgrades before a ball is kicked in anger come August.
