Brighton set to rival Chelsea for Ghanaian star Mohammed Kudus

The 22-year-old Ajax midfielder posted career-best numbers in 2022-23 for the Dutch giants while also bursting onto the international scene with Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and subsequently attracting interest from a number of clubs

Europa League-bound Brighton continues their push to add both quality and depth during the summer transfer window as Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls could be set to rival fellow Premier League outfit Chelsea for Ajax starlet Mohammed Kudus.

One of the breakout stars of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the 22-year-old Ghanaian international is coming off a fine season with Dutch giants Ajax where he posted a career-best 11 goals in the Eredivisie while also adding 4 goals in just 6 appearances in the Champions League.

Previously linked with interest from Chelsea as well as Newcastle United, Brighton could well be prepared to make Kudus their fourth signing of the summer in the wake of completed deals for Watford’s João Pedro (~£30m), Liverpool’s James Milner (free), and Borussia Dortmund’s Mahmoud Dahoud (free).

With Brighton set to embark on their first-ever European campaign while also coping with the loss of Alexis Mac Allister and the likely departure of Moisés Caicedo, it is imperative that the Seagulls not only replace both outgoings but add further quality into the ranks under De Zerbi that gives them the best possible chance of competing on both fronts.

Capable of slotting into a number of roles in a modern attacking system, Kudus offers an incredibly versatile profile that would suit De Zerbi to the ground akin to the evolution of Mac Allister, and to a certain extent, veteran midfielder Adam Lallana.

There has yet to be a report surrounding how much Kudus would cost the club should they make a formal offer but with his current market value per Transfermarkt sitting at €40m, it is conceivable to suggest that Ajax could seek a fee in a region between £40m and £50m should they allow the Ghanaian to make another big step in his young career.
