Arsenal ‘very close’ to first summer signing

Arsenal’s summer spending looks set to begin very soon.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is ‘very close’ to joining Arsenal, however, not so long ago he was suggesting that a move anywhere was somehow out of the question:

“Leaving Real Sociedad with the season we are having would be illogical,” he was quoted as saying by Sport.

“I am very happy here and I’m looking forward to a quiet summer.”

The defensive midfielder has spent his entire career on Real Sociedad’s books and has made 138 appearances for their senior side.

Zubimendi is valued at €40m by transfermarket but as he is under contract until 2027, Real Sociedad will likely be able to demand a higher fee if they wish.

The 24-year-old is a defensive midfielder by trade and would make a solid partner for either Granit Xhaka or Thomas Partey should he indeed sign.
