Arsenal dealt fresh blow in central midfield hunt as player tells Gunners to wait

Arsenal’s search for a new central midfielder is proving to be a tough one.

Arsenal have already signed Leandro Trossard from Brighton in a deal worth £26m and Jakub Kiwior from Serie A side Spezia for £20m.

This provides cover in the Gunners’ forward line and also gives Mikel Arteta a second left-footed centre-back option, as Arsenal currently only have Gabriel for that spot.

Now, it appears that the north Londoners have turned their attention to central midfield.

Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka have formed a great partnership at the base of Arsenal’s midfield this season, but an injury to either would likely spell the end of the Gunners’ title hopes as their cover is currently not up to scratch.

But their efforts to sign cover for the aforementioned duo are not going too well at present.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has turned down a move to the Gunners though is open to joining in the summer, according to reports in Spain.

Mikel Arteta is understood to have greenlit the club triggering the midfielder’s €60m release clause at Real Sociedad.

But Zubimendi has made it clear he is unwilling to leave Real Sociedad during the season. According to Cadena SER, the 23-year-old wants to evaluate all offers at the end of the season in light of interest from Barcelona, who consider him a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets.
