The latest on Jamie Vardy ahead of Leicester’s meeting with Arsenal

The latest on Jamie Vardy ahead of Leicester’s meeting with Arsenal

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has provided an update on the fitness of star striker Jamie Vardy, after the veteran missed his side’s meeting with Aston Villa over the weekend.

Barkley strikes late

The Foxes returned to action on Sunday evening, in their first outing following the international break.

Rodgers’ men welcomed high-flying Aston Villa to the King Power Stadium, for a Premier League clash.

Leicester headed into proceedings in search of a bounce-back result, having bizarrely followed a 5-2 victory over Manchester City late last month with a 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham last time out.

When all was said and done, however, the Foxes’ dip continued.

An altogether flat display at the King Power eventually saw the hosts downed by a goal to nil, as Ross Barkley’s injury-time strike kept alive Villa’s remarkable start to the campaign.

Vardy latest

Leicester’s defeat, whilst obviously disappointing, though, did come with a whole host of the club’s key players missing.

The likes of Caglar Soyuncu, Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison and Jamie Vardy were absent from the hosts’ starting XI to take on Villa, with Turkish stopper Soynucu having since been ruled out for an expected three months.

As outlined above, meanwhile, on the back of Sunday’s clash, Brendan Rodgers has since also provided an update on the fitness of hitman Vardy.

The 33-year-old was left out yesterday as a precaution, to avoid a recurrence of an ongoing calf issue.

And Rodgers has revealed that he also expects Vardy to miss his side’s Europa League opener versus Zorya Luhansk on Thursday night.

In a boost for the Foxes, though, their prolific striker should return to fitness in time to feature versus Arsenal this weekend:

‘Jamie will probably miss the European game and hopefully he’ll be okay for our next league game. It’s just a reoccurrence of what he’s had over the last number of years, Jamie.’

‘Even before I came in, I’m led to believe he’s had some issues with his calves, that keep him out for a bit.’

‘This isn’t so serious, but it was one where playing him (versus Aston Villa) would have risked a tear and we couldn’t afford to do that. We’re hopeful that he’ll be ready for our next league game.’
