Reece James reveals which of De Bruyne & Salah he would prefer to see back at Chelsea

Chelsea star Reece James has this afternoon discussed the scenario in which he could choose one of the club’s former stars to make a return to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea departures

Much has been made of the Premier League success achieved by players to have been deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea over recent years.

A number of the club’s former stars have either returned to England as polished, world-class performers, or enjoyed breakout spells after being sold to Premier League rivals.

Examples of such players include the likes of Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

The former pair made the move to Stamford Bridge as raw youngsters, before a combination of competition for places and a lack of patience eventually saw Chelsea opt to sell both abroad.

The years since, though, have of course seen both Salah and De Bruyne return to wreak havoc on Premier League backlines.

Liverpool standout Salah has emerged as one of European football’s most prolific attackers since his move to Anfield, with the 27-year-old having been on course for imminent English top-flight glory before the campaign was halted by COVID-19.

Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne, meanwhile, has secured back-to-back Premier League titles over the last two seasons, with many of the opinion that the Belgian is actually the finest player English football has to offer.

‘Probably have De Bruyne’

And, as outlined above, one of Chelsea’s current stars was today drawn on the prospect of the aforementioned duo making a return to Stamford Bridge.

The individual in question was Reece James.

However, in the scenario, James would be forced to choose between Salah and De Bruyne.

And, despite being a huge fan of the former, the Blues stopper went on to reveal that he would opt to bring back Man City’s star midfielder:

‘I’d probably have De Bruyne,’ James told Bleacher Report.

‘Both are great at their position. There’s no major reason for De Bruyne over Salah. Just like his style of play.’

When drawn on who would be his absolute dream signing, though, James opted for De Bruyne’s international teammate, another former Chelsea star, in the form of Eden Hazard:

‘Eden Hazard. I just loved the way he played. I still love him. He’ll go down as one of Chelsea’s best players ever.’
