Real Madrid vs Manchester City prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester City
Manchester City travel to Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday evening to face Real Madrid for the third time in eight seasons. Their two previous visits to the Bernabéu both ended in defeat.
These two met for the first time in Group D for the opening match of the 2012/13 Champions League Campaign. Madrid twice came from behind to secure a 3-2 win with Ronaldo scoring the injury time winner. It was the start of a miserable campaign for City as they finished bottom of their group, crashing out of Europe at the first hurdle.
City and Real Madrid clashed once again in 2016. Manuel Pellegrini’s City travelled to the Bernabéu for a Semi-Final 2nd leg, after a 0-0 draw at the Etihad. However, disaster struck once more with captain Vincent Kompany collapsing holding his thigh in the opening minutes. A Fernando own-goal proved to be the only goal of the tie seeing Real Madrid through to the final, which they won on penalties against their local rivals Atlético.
This remains Manchester City’s best ever performance in the competition so far. A fact Pep Guardiola is under pressure to resolve this season.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Who will win?
Real Madrid have won the two previous encounters between these sides at the Santiago Bernabéu. Manchester City also have a poor record on their travels, with just two wins in ten visits to Spain. Therefore, the 7/4 odds available for Los Merengues could prove very good value.
The only previous encounter between these sides in the knockout stages of European competition saw them play out a cagey 0-0 draw at the Etihad in the first leg. Odds of 11/4 are available if you see them cancelling each other out once more.
Among the English sides, only Liverpool and Arsenal have managed to claim the scalp of Real Madrid in front of their own fans. Manchester City have won four of their last five away matches coming into this match. Odds of 7/5 are available for them to end Madrid’s five game undefeated streak in this competition.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Who will score?
Karim Benzema’s goals have really carried Real Madrid at times this season. He is second only to Lionel Messi in La Liga’s scoring charts this season with thirteen goals for Madrid. However, Benzema is without a goal in his last four starts for Madrid. He was also one of the worst performers for Los Blancos on Saturday. If you feel the French international will recapture the form that saw him smash two past PSG here back in November, you can get odds of 6/5 for him to find the scoresheet. Or you can back Benzema at 9/2 to be the game’s first goal-scorer.
The last time we saw Luka Jović in the white of Madrid, he was smashing the ball into the roof of the net against Osasuna. Since then, he has been missing with a stomach problem. If the Serbian starts on Wednesday, you can get odds of 11/2 for him to grab the game’s opener. Or 6/4 to score at any time during the match.
Sergio Agüero has never been on the winning side facing Real Madrid in fourteen attempts. He had three goals in eleven appearances for Atlético prior to joining Manchester City. Since, Agüero has one goal in three starts for the Citizens against Real in the Champions League. After a fantastic run of eight goals in five games, he is currently on a run of four games without a goal. The Argentine International starts the match as the 21/20 favourite to end this mini-drought with a goal on Wednesday. Kun is 4/1 to be the first scorer at the Bernabéu.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Match preview
It is not often in history that you find Real Madrid having a problem in attack with scoring goals.
Karim Benzema has been in the form of his career this year and has thirteen goals and six assists in La Liga, leading the club in both metrics. Once we look past the French International though, there is little offered up by their other options in attack.
Gareth Bale has just two goals and two assists this season. Lucas Vázquez has also been in and out of the side, chipping in with two goals and an assist. Playmakers Isco and James Rodríguez have also struggled for game time and have just one goal apiece.
Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and Luka Jovic may hold a lot of potential for the future. However, between them they have just five goals and two assists in the league.
As it stands a central defender – Sergio Ramos – is currently their second top scorer with five league goals. Their midfield has also been chipping in consistently, with Valverde, Modric, Kroos and Casemiro having eleven goals and fourteen assists combined.
With the quality on display in that area of the pitch tonight, there is a feeling the game could be won or lost in midfield for Madrid.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City: A look at the visitors
Manchester City have won their last two matches on the pitch. However, there is a feeling that they are in crisis off it.
This will be their first match in Europe since UEFA announced the decision to ban City from European Competition for two years, starting next season. The club immediately released a statement reaffirming their innocence and promising to fight the ruling in court. This did not stop the speculation whether Pep Guardiola and several of City’s key players would hang around for the outcome.
Local media ran stories confirming Guardiola, Raheem Sterling and others had confirmed their commitment to the club. Yet City fans in the build up to this match have accused Sterling of ‘flirting’ with a move to Madrid in his interview with AS. He stated Madrid are a “massive” club, that he is “quite” happy at City but “no one knows what the future will hold”.
Of course, this could all backfire on Real Madrid. Sterling hasn’t played at the level we have come to expect of him based on his last three seasons. Perhaps the allure of playing for Los Blancos is the proverbial kick up the backside he needs to ignite his best form.
Real Madrid team news vs Manchester City
The injuries that have plagued Real Madrid’s season are showing no sign of letting up any time soon.
Nacho, Marcelo, Isco, James Rodríguez, Luca Modric, Gareth Bale and Lucas Vázquez have all seen large chunks of their season written off due to injury.
Eden Hazard is another who has missed large parts of the season due to a hamstring injury and a broken foot. After making his first start since November against Celta Vigo, he retained his place for the trip to Levante this weekend. Unfortunately, he was withdrawn towards the end of the game and could miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle.
Mariano Díaz is another who will miss the match due to injury. He has only made the matchday once this season for Real, back in October.
Marco Asensio has been unavailable for Los Blancos all season due to a cruciate ligament rupture. Like Sane, he is nearing a return but likely won’t feature in either leg of this tie for Madrid.
Gareth Bale and Luka Jović were missing at the weekend with a stomach bug. They are expected to fit for Wednesday though.
Zinedine Zidane is expected to ring the changes after a poor performance and result at Levante at the weekend. Federico Valverde and Vinícius Júnior look the most likely to be restored to the starting XI. James, Bale and Jović will be hoping to make a surprise inclusion.
Predicted Real Madrid team vs Manchester City
Manchester City team news vs Real Madrid
Manchester City come into the match with almost a clean bill of health.
Leroy Sane is the only player who remains ruled out for the Citizens. While he is back in full training, he will need some time to build up his fitness after six months out.
Raheem Sterling has missed the last two league matches with a hamstring injury. However, Guardiola felt confident he would be available for the two matches against Madrid. Without ‘any chance to win the Premier League’ he stated he would be willing to take more risk with him in this competition.
There may still be some further changes from the XI that dispatched with Leicester City at the weekend. Gabriel Jesus may feel he is deserving of a start after claiming the winning goal from the bench. While David Silva could replace Gündogan in midfield.
