Phil Foden breaks Lionel Messi record with brace vs Manchester United

Phil Foden has broken a record previously held by Lionel Messi.

Manchester City faced off with Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.

The Sky Blues were favourites ahead of the match, but few likely expected such a poor display from Manchester United.

Phil Foden opened the scoring for the Citizens inside six minutes before Erling Haaland got himself a brace thanks to two lovely balls from Kevin De Bruyne.

Haaland then turned provided to set up Foden for his second, finishing off a lovely counter-attack.

After scoring his second vs United, Foden now has 50 goals for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

And, as per Opta, that has seen Foden a record previously held by Lionel Messi:

“Phil Foden has scored his 50th goal for Manchester City in all competitions. Aged 22 years and 127 days, he is now the youngest player to reach 50 goals under Pep Guardiola, surpassing Lionel Messi (22y 164d).”

Elsewhere, it was also revealed that aged 22 years and 73 days, Erling Haaland is the second-youngest player to score in his first Manchester derby for Man City in the Premier League, after Mario Balotelli in October 2011 (21y 72d)
