Official: Liverpool announce new Sporting Director ahead of massive summer

The Reds have made their first addition ahead of the summer

Liverpool have confirmed that Jorg Schmadtke has joined the club as their new sporting director, after Julian Ward departed the club at the end of the season.

The 59-year-old has joined the club after spells in the Bundesliga, most recently with Wolfsburg, who he left in January 2023.

He will enter a club in need of a major overhaul this summer, with midfield a key area that requires improvement following a disappointing season that left Jurgen Klopp’s side fifth in the Premier League, and without Champions League football to offer to new signings next season.

They are also looking to strengthen in defence, with a new centre-back and a backup right back on the cards, while outgoings could also force them to recruit in goal and at left back.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon told Liverpool.com: “Firstly, I would like to welcome Jorg to Liverpool Football Club in the knowledge that he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into a role in which such qualities can only be beneficial both to him and us.

“Jorg will work with our football operations department as it continues to provide support for Jürgen Klopp, in keeping with our ongoing endeavour to keep growing and developing the club in all areas.

“We wish Julian and his young family the very best for the future and thank him for everything he has done for Liverpool FC during the past 11 years.”
