Liverpool beat Newcastle 4-0

Newcastle vs Liverpool betting tips: Premier League preview & predictions

Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction: Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool

This Saturday evening kick-off, in the Premier League, marks the 72nd meeting of these two clubs in the history of English football. Liverpool have the clear upper hand, with 42 wins to Newcastle’s 15.

However, here at St James’ Park, results of the head-to-head are much more evenly balanced, with the Geordies having 13 wins to Liverpool’s 12 from their 34 matches.

It will be a fixture that invokes memories of the many Premier League classics between them. Not least, Liverpool’s back-to-back 4-3 victories, at Anfield, in the mid-nineties.

It is also a match that will see Rafael Benitez face-off against a club he still holds close to his heart. He is revered for winning the club it’s fifth Champions League trophy in dramatic fashion in Istanbul. However, he is considered a legend for how he carried himself with class and dignity during a tough time for the club and also for his support of the Hillsborough campaign.

Above all else, Benitez is admired for being a consummate professional and giving his all for every club he is employed by. The travelling Kop will expect no favours from Rafa or his side. They wouldn’t have it any other way.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Who will win?

Newcastle have not won any of the last four games against Liverpool. However, they have been on a fantastic run here at St James’ Park with six wins in their last seven matches here.

Can the Magpies win their final home game of the season? They may be good value here at 8/1 to do so.

The last match between these sides, in Newcastle, finished in a 1-1 draw. Will they share the points once again? The odds are 17/4 for this match to end in stalemate.

Liverpool have won each of the last two matches between these sides. However, they haven’t won here, at St James’ Park, in any of their last four visits. Can the Reds avoid making it five without a victory with a win here? They are odds-on favourites here at 1/3.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Who will score?

Ayoze Perez has been on fire recently for Newcastle, scoring five goals in his last three matches for the club; eleven goals in total for the season. However, he only lasted thirty-three minutes of last week’s game in Brighton and is touch-and-go to start here on Saturday. Ayoze is 14/1 to grab the first goal in this game. 9/2 to score at any time.

Mohamed Salah has scored on each of his last two games against Newcastle. This sees Salah ranked as the favourite to break the deadlock here, at 3/1. Or you can back him to score at any time, with odds of 5/6.

Divock Origi may be a surprise starter at the weekend, for Liverpool. He has an impressive record in the league of a goal every 143 minutes, albeit from a very small sample size. Origi could prove to be good value though, at 9/2, as first scorer. Or 13/10 to score at any time.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Match preview

Liverpool have won each of their last seven league matches. They are doing all they can to match the outrageous pace being set by league-leaders, Manchester City. They can only continue to pick up maximum points from their games while praying someone will do them a favour.

They find themselves playing before City once more, with the Sky Blues facing Leicester for Monday Night football.

Newcastle come into this match in fantastic form also. They were dangling on the edge of the relegation-zone by a point as little as six games ago. However, their excellent form, particularly at home, has steered them clear and comfortably into mid-table.

The Magpies’ home record of 6 wins from their last 7 matches has played a big part in the turn-around of their fortunes.

The Reds will need to put their disappointment of losing 0-3 in the Camp Nou behind them and be at their very best here if they are to have any hope of maintaining pressure on Manchester City.

We can see from the expected goals model above that it won’t be easy. Newcastle are at their best point this season defensively, giving up chances worth an average of 1.2 goals per game at the moment.

If that could be maintained over a full season, they would be in the top-5 in the league, defensively.

Their problem continues to be at the other end though. The form of Miguel Almiron and Ayoze Perez improved their attacking record recently. However, with Almiron and Perez likely to miss the game, it seems Salomón Rondón will be the only member of the ‘Three Amigos’ available to them here.

Sean Longstaff, Florian Lejeune and Miguel Almiron remain unavailable for Newcastle due to injury.

Ayoze Perez came off in the first half of Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Brighton with a hip injury. He is expected to be replaced by Kenedy in the starting XI should he not recover in time.

Jamaal Lascelles has been struggling through the week due to stomach cramps and will be assessed closer to kick-off. Lascelles was spotted in training on Thursday.

Ki Sung-yueng played a prominent role in their recent wins over Leicester and Southampton. He was rested for the trip to Brighton, but is expected to return to the starting XI here.

Naby Keita Liverpool

Adam Lallana continues to be absent for Liverpool due to an injury.

Naby Keita came off with a suspected adductor tear. He looks likely to miss the rest of the season for the Reds. Expect Jordan Henderson to replace him in the starting XI.

With this game falling in the middle of a run of three games in six days, expect Jurgen Klopp to rotate heavily from the side that featured at the Camp Nou.

Divock Origi may get a rare start here while Roberto Firmino is still recovering from a minor groin problem.

Dejan Lovren may be set for a recall to the starting XI to manage the more physical threat of Salomón Rondón.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also likely to be recalled to the starting XI in the place of Joe Gomez.
