Manchester United headed into the game sat 4th in the Premier League and just four points adrift of Manchester City.
They also have a game in hand on 3rd-place Newcastle, who were also in action vs Arsenal on Tuesday.
So, a win for the Red Devils on Tuesday would have been huge for their Champions League hopes.
And when all was said and done at Old Trafford, United came away with a comfortable win.
Manchester United had a penalty shout nine minutes in when Van de Beek’s header hit the arm of Chris Mepham, but nothing was given.
Luke Shaw’s cross then found Anthony Martial a few minutes later, but the Frenchman put his header wide.
United continued to dominate but could not find a second goal before the break. The Reds also lost Donny van de Beek to injury just before half-time.
Garnacho, the man who came on for Van de Beek, then provided the assist for United’s second goal, setting up Luke Shaw 49 minutes in.
Martial had another chance to make it 3-0 shortly after but he once again but a header wide.
United got their third goal with four minutes of normal time to play thanks to Marcus Rashford.

I’m still not convinced by Wan Bissaka on the ball and also how he defends scenarios where the winger doesn’t try to take him 1v1
