Manchester City vs West Ham betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Updated post: The original match between Manchester City and West Ham was due to be played on Sunday February 9, 2020.

Due to bad weather and with fears for supporter safety, the Premier League match was called off. A couple of days later it was confirmed that Manchester City and West Ham would play on Wednesday February 19, 2020.

The post below is updated to reflect the upcoming encounter between Manchester City and West Ham, this Wednesday evening.

Manchester City vs West Ham prediction: Manchester City 3-1 West Ham

Manchester City will be looking to return to winning ways after two consecutive defeats in all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s side have now gone nearly 200 minutes without scoring a goal.

West Ham have been one of City’s favourite opponents in recent seasons. City have scored at least four goals in four of the last five meetings with West Ham.

West Ham are aiming to avoid a fourth consecutive away defeat in the league.

There is little doubt that the build up to this match will have been overshadowed by the two-year European competition ban handed out to Manchester City.

Will that galvanise the Manchester City players?

Manchester City vs West Ham: Who will win?

Manchester City have won 10 consecutive matches against the Hammers in all competitions. Unsurprisingly, Manchester City are massive 1/8 favourites to win the match while a West Ham win is priced at 16/1. The draw can be backed at 10/1.

Seven of the last eight league matches at the Etihad have featured three or more goals. Bet on over 2.5 goals in the match at 2/9.

Sergio Aguero has not scored in his last two appearances but he was named the Premier League’s player of the month for January after scoring six league goals.

Aguero is 13/5 to open the scoring and 2/5 to score anytime.

Manchester City vs West Ham Premier League match preview

Manchester City host West Ham at the Etihad on Wednesday eveing.

Despite completely dominating the match for over an hour, Manchester City suffered a 2-0 defeat at Spurs last time out, finishing the match with 10 men.

City find themselves 25-points behind Liverpool, with this game in hand. Considering Liverpool have such an impregnable defence, and such a commanding lead, there is no talk of a title race.

Manchester City have now lost six league matches this season – the same amount as Leicester, Wolves and Arsenal.

City have won eight of their 12 league games at the Etihad this season, scoring 31 and conceding 12. Manchester City have only lost three of their last 34 Premier League matches at the Etihad.

City will be hoping to consolidate their position in the table before taking on third-placed Leicester on Saturday evening.

Considering Real Madrid in the Champions League comes next, it would be no surprise if there was plenty of rotation for Manchester City over the next two Premier League games.

Can David Moyes save West Ham?

West Ham gave up a 3-1 lead in their last game as they were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Brighton. Goals from Issa Diop and Robert Snodgrass (2) had Moyes’ side in a seemingly comfortable position before they conceded two late goals.

The Hammers have now failed to win their last six matches in all competitions.

West Ham’s away form ranks 13th in the league, with three wins and three draws from their 12 matches on the road. Only bottom side Norwich have scored fewer away goals than the Hammers (10).

West Ham have a really tough run of fixtures coming up. Following City, the Hammers face Liverpool, Arsenal, Wolves, Spurs and Chelsea in their next six.

Wednesday nigh’s match will be the 38th Premier League meeting between the two sides. Man City have beaten West Ham on 22 occasions in the Premier League, losing nine times and drawing the other six.

Manchester City were 5-0 winners in the reverse fixture at the London Stadium on the opening weekend of the season. Raheem Sterling scored a second-half hat-trick while Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero also got their names on the scoresheet.

Manchester City team news vs West Ham

Oleksandr Zinchenko will serve a one-match suspension following his red card against Spurs.

Manchester City are hopeful that Benjamin Mendy will be available for Wednesday despite not being completely fit before their winter break. After Angelino joined RB Leipzig in the January window, Joao Cancelo may have to fill in at left-back if Mendy fails his fitness test.

Aymeric Laporte is being eased back into action following a long-term injury. The Frenchman did not feature in City’s last three matches and should start this one.

Raheem Sterling limped off with a hamstring injury at Tottenham and will miss out. Sterling is expected to be available for the Real Madrid Champions League tie.

Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and David Silva could all return to the starting eleven after starting on the bench last time out.

Wednesday’s game will come too soon for Leroy Sane, who has recently returned to training.

West Ham team news vs Manchester City

Thomas Soucek will be hoping to keep his place in midfield after making his debut against Brighton.

Deadline day signing Jarrod Bowen is expected to be involved in some capacity, likely from the start. Robert Snodgrass should also start after being involved in all three goals against Brighton.

Ryan Fredericks is Moyes’ first-choice right-back, so veteran full-back Pablo Zabaleta is likely to start on the bench against his former club. Zabaleta made 230 Premier League appearances for Manchester City.

Jack Wilshere, Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko remain sidelined for the Hammers.
