Manchester City vs Chelsea betting tips: Premier League match preview and predictions

Manchester City vs Chelsea prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Chelsea

A huge clash as the sides who have won seven of the last ten Premier League titles go head-to-head.

Manchester City were aiming to win the title for a third consecutive year but are now adrift of the leaders.

In fact, Chelsea go into this one ahead of their hosts in the table.

This season so far, Manchester City have scored the most Premier League goals at home (19).

Meanwhile, Chelsea have scored the most on the road (18).

This promises to be a classic.

It’s fair to say things are not going to plan for Manchester City.

Last time out, they travelled to Anfield but were steamrollered by league-leaders Liverpool.

It finished 3-1 to the European Champions with Bernardo Silva’s late goal a mere consolation.

That ended a run of three straight wins but is their third league loss already.

Three defeats in their last nine matches is staggering given that they only lost six of the previous 88.

Also, Man City’s tally of 25 points after 12 games is the lowest a Pep Guardiola team has ever amassed.

So, the Citizens dropped down to fourth in the table, behind Chelsea and Leicester, but nine points adrift of Manchester City.

They surely cannot let that gap widen any further so cannot afford many more slip ups.

Will Manchester City get back on track?

Can Chelsea inflict more misery on Manchester City?

In contrast, everything appears to be going right for Chelsea.

Before the international break, the two men of the moment struck in the second half as they overcome Crystal Palace 2-0 at home.

They are, Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic.

That made it six Premier League wins in a row for the Blues with at least one of those two having scored in four of those.

So, despite a difficult start, Frank Lampard’s team are level on points with second-placed Leicester and one above Manchester City.

This was supposed to be a transition season but only Manchester United and Liverpool have been able to beat this side so far.

They did beat Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena in the Champions League but are still searching for a statement Premier League victory.

Will it come at the home of the champions?

One of the reasons behind Man City’s hammering at Anfield was the length of their injury list.

However, Pep Guardiola will have some of his key players back after a much needed international break.

Goalkeeper Ederson should be back after suffering a knock against Atalanta in the Champions League.

In the Liverpool game, aged 36 years and 211 days, Claudio Bravo became the joint-oldest player to start a match under Pep Guardiola.

The Chilean will be back on the bench here.

In defence, Aymeric Laporte and Oleksandr Zinchenko are long-term absentees.

During the international break, Benjamin Mendy started France’s win in Albania so will come in for Angeliño at left-back here.

Kyle Walker and Fernandinho will keep their places in the back four but Nicolás Otamendi will displace John Stones.

João Cancelo is also likely to be on the bench.

Rodri will anchor the midfield with İlkay Gündoğan left out.

Ahead of the Spaniard will be another; David Silva is back after a thigh problem.

Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez will make up the frightening attacking quartet.

Bernardo Silva is suspended for this match after accepting his FA charge.

Up front will be Sergio Agüero.

The Argentinian has scored ten Premier League goals against Chelsea, more than any other player in the competition’s history.

Also, he has netted eight goals in his last six outings against the Blues, including a hat-trick in a 6-0 win in the corresponding fixture last season.

All of this will surely consign Gabriel Jesus to a place on the bench where he’ll find Phil Foden.

Will Manchester City get back to winning ways?

Chelsea team news vs Manchester City

As for the visitors, their starting XI is much more settled.

As always, Kepa Arrizabalaga will be in goal.

At left-back Emerson Palmieri remains the first-choice left-back ahead of Marcos Alonso.

Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori are also likely to continue at centre-back.

Antonio Rüdiger isn’t quite back from injury and Andreas Christensen is out of favour.

At right-back, Lampard has a decision to make.

César Azpilicueta had started 73 consecutive Premier League matches for Chelsea before being left out for Reece James against Crystal Palace.

That was the current longest run of any outfield player.

Nevertheless, the club captain’s experience should see him come back in for James for this huge match.

In midfield, Jorginho is back; he missed the Crystal Palace win as he had amassed five yellow cards.

He’s likely to join N’Golo Kanté and Mateo Kovačić is a more cautious than usual midfield trio.

If this does happen, Mason Mount could be pushed wide with Willian, Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi left out.

On the other side, Christian Pulisic is a certain starter.

He has scored five goals in his last three Premier League matches and is looking to become the first American to score in four consecutive appearances in the league.

He did miss the USA’s CONCACAF Nations League A wins against Canada and Cuba over the break but will be fit to start this one.

Up front, Chelsea have one of Europe’s in-form front men.

Tammy Abraham’s tally of seven away goals is the best return by a Premier League player in 2019/20.

To put that into perspective, his record is equal to, or even better than, 15 Premier League clubs.

He also got his first England goals last week so could Abraham fire Chelsea to a win at the Etihad?
