Manchester City vs Aston Villa betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Aston Villa prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Aston Villa

Manchester City can close the gap on league leaders Liverpool to three points with a win.

City’s home form this season has been uncharacteristically poor by their high stands, having only won two of their four league matches at the Etihad. That said, City have scored a league-high 14 goals at home.

Villa are quietly going about their business with just one defeat in their last six, which came against Arsenal.

Manchester City vs Aston Villa: Who will win?

Man City are unbeaten in their 21 of their last 23 Premier League matches. City are massive 1/12 favourites to win the match while Villa can be backed at 25/1. The draw is priced at 10/1.

Man City have scored at least two goals in nine of their last 10 matches, while Aston Villa have scored at least two goals in their last four. Bet on three of more goals in the match at 2/9.

There are question marks over who will start up front for City, making Raheem Sterling an obvious pick. The winger has scored 16 goals in 17 appearances for club and country this season. Sterling is 7/2 to open the scoring and 4/7 to score anytime.

Manchester City vs Aston Villa Premier League match preview

Manchester City host Aston Villa at the Etihad in Matchweek 10 of the Premier League.

City ran out 5-1 winners in their midweek Champions League group game against Atalanta at the Etihad. Atalanta took the lead before Man City opened the floodgates. Sergio Aguero scored a first-half brace before Raheem Sterling bagged a second-half hat-trick to take home the match ball.

Last weekend City beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Gabriel Jesus and David Silva scored the goals for Pep Guardiola’s side. City lost their last home match in the league 2-0 to Wolves before the international break, although Guardiola has never lost back-to-back home fixtures in his entire managerial league career.

Aston Villa have won back-to-back Premier League matches and are unbeaten in their last four in all competitions.

Last weekend Villa beat 10-men Brighton at Villa Park. Jack Grealish equalised for the home side on the stroke of half-time before Matt Targett bagged a dramatic winner in second-half stoppage time. Of some concern will be the fact that they have conceded at least one goal in each of their last five matches.

Saturday’s match will be the 39th Premier League meeting between the two sides. City have beaten Villa 22 times in that period, losing seven and drawing nine. City have won 10 of their last 11 home matches against the Villains.

Man City were 4-0 winners in their last match against Aston Villa in March 2016. Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero (2) and Raheem Sterling found the net on the day. In fact, three of City’s last six matches against Villa have ended in a 4-0 victory.

Manchester City team news vs Aston Villa

Rodri is ruled out after being forced off with a hamstring injury in City’s midweek win over Atalanta. Ilkay Gundogan could be used in the deeper midfield role, with Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva expected to make up the rest of City’s midfield three.

Fit-again John Stones should be ready to start and could get the nod over Nicolas Otamendi. Stones came on as a first-half substitute in midweek.

Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus were unused substitutes in midweek. Silva should replace Riyad Mahrez in the starting eleven while Jesus will compete with Sergio Aguero for the striking role.  Aguero has scored six goals in his last four Premier League matches against Aston Villa.

Former Aston Villa loanee Kyle Walker is expected to keep his place at right-back, with Joao Cancelo is another option for Pep Guardiola.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is sidelined with a knee injury, so Benjamin Mendy will continue at left-back.

Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte are long-term absentees.

Aston Villa team news vs Manchester City

Jota is Aston Villa’s only injured player. The Spanish midfielder has undergone surgery on a hernia and could make a return in November.

Jonathan Kodjia and James Chester started Villa’s PL2 match on Monday as they continue to build up match fitness before returning to first-team action.

Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi will compete for a spot on Villa’s right-wing. Douglas Luiz will also be pushing for a start after another substitute appearance.

Wesley is expected to lead the line once again with Kienan Davis an alternate striking option for manager Dean Smith.
