Manchester City vs Arsenal: Score prediction & betting tips

Manchester City have put 16 goals past Arsenal in their last six meetings at the Etihad.

Arsenal’s last win away to a top six club was at Manchester City but that was way back in January 2015.

Sergio Agüero has scored 11 goals against Arsenal in 15 appearances; he’s only scored more against two clubs.

101 Great Goals predicts: Manchester City 3-1 Arsenal

The Premier League is back after exactly 100 days away and with a headline act on opening night.

Neither of these two clubs have been at their best this season but that could change after such a long break.

Manchester City, to be fair, have already won the Carabao Cup and Community Shield and are still in the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

However, the fact the back to back champions are second in the table, 25 points behind Liverpool is not good enough.

Also, they’ll know within the next month if they are banned from UEFA competitions and, if so, for how long.

Given all this, there is very little for the Citizens to play for in the Premier League but surely Pep Guardiola won’t let them take their foot of the gas.

Can Arsenal make a late run for the top four/five?

Arsenal meanwhile are languishing in ninth place having not finished that low since 1994/95 when they came 12th.

However, since Mikel Arteta replaced Unai Emery, the Gunners have only lost once in the league and are actually the only unbeaten side in the Premier League in 2020.

For now.

Nevertheless, they are still chasing numerous sides above them and will have to go on a similarly long unbeaten run in this period of the season to qualify for any form of European football.

A return to action does not get much tougher than this so can Arsenal upset the odds at the Etihad?

With a fully fit squad to choose from, and now the ability to make five substitutions, Pep Guardiola has an array of options to choose from, both pre match and in game.

Ederson will be looking to improve on just 13 clean sheets in 31 appearances this season.

In front of him, Aymeric Laporte has been struggling with injury all season, most recently hobbling off in Madrid in late February.

However, the Frenchman is back and will most likely start.

Despite John Stones and Nicolás Otamendi also being fit, Guardiola seems wedded to Fernandinho in defence.

At right-back, João Cancelo made a very rare start in their last game at Old Trafford but surely Kyle Walker will return here.

On the other side, Benjamin Mendy could come in for the more conservative Oleksandr Zinchenko.

With Fernandinho at the back, Rodri will anchor the midfield; the alternative choice is İlkay Gündoğan.

Further forward, only five of the nine options they have can start.

Kevin De Bruyne, who’s racked up 13 goals and 26 assists in 45 appearances for club and county this season, is one of few certainties.

David Silva has already announced he’ll be leaving the club at the end of the season but he too could start.

His namesake Bernardo could be on the right flank but this would mean Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez are on the bench.

On the other side, Leroy Sané hasn’t played at all since getting injured in the Community Shield win over Liverpool.

However, with the German heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich, Raheem Sterling is the most likely man to start.

Through the middle, Gabriel Jesus is good but he’s no Sergio Agüero.

The Argentine became the Premier League’s top scoring overseas player, beating the record set by Thierry Henry at Arsenal.

Will this plethora of talent be too strong for the Gunners?

Arsenal team news vs Manchester City

LONDON, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 09: Nicolas Pépé of Arsenal celebrates after scoring his sides second goal with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Arsenal FC at London Stadium on December 09, 2019 in London, United Kingdom. (Photo by Julian Finney/Getty Images)

As for Arsenal, the break has allowed them to get some key players back fit and ready to go.

It will be interesting to see what Mikel Arteta, who’s only had 11 league games in charge, will do differently after over 14 weeks of preparation time.

One certainty is that Bernd Leno will be in goal having been, in many people’s eyes, Arsenal’s player of the season.

In defence, first-choice full-backs Héctor Bellerín and Kieran Tierney were two of those struggling for fitness in March but both will surely come straight in here.

Rob Holding is another, he’s only played nine times this season, but he’s likely to be on the bench for this one.

January arrival from Flamengo Pablo Marí and David Luiz could be the centre-backs; the other unconvincing options are Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi.

Calum Chambers who ruptured his cruciate ligament against Chelsea in December is the only squad member injured.

Euro 2016 winner Cédric Soares, who started the final of that competition, is still awaiting his debut for the club.

In midfield, Lucas Torreira fractured his ankle at Portsmouth on 2 March so is unlikely to start here.

This may mean Granti Xhaka is partnered by Mattéo Guendouzi in midfield.

Further forward, Dani Ceballos’ energy and running could see him get the nod over Mesut Özil for this tough away game.

On the left 18 year old Bukayo Saka had been covering at left-back in the absence of Tierney and Sead Kolašinac before the break.

He could start in his more natural left-wing position with Nicolas Pépé on the right and top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pushed through the middle.

The Gabonese forward has scored 20 goals this season; that’s 28% of the club’s total.

If Aubameyang scores in this one he’ll have managed 50 goals in 76 Premier League games, the exact same figures as Huddersfield Town.

This set up would mean young star Gabriel Martinelli as well as Alexandre Lacazette, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah are substitutes.

Can Mikel Arteta defeat his old mentor?
