If you are a Liverpool supporter, you are likely dancing in the streets after boss Jürgen Klopp’s fitness update on key center-back pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

With the Reds keen to improve on their disappointing 2020-21 domestic campaign, which saw them finish third and a whopping 17-points behind Premier League champions Manchester City, it will do the Anfield outfit a world of good to hear that both defenders will be available for selection this weekend, should Klopp decide to give them a run-out.
The defensive duo both completed recent preseason outings without issue, when van Dijk saw out 70-minutes against Athletic Club, and Gomez hit the 60-minute mark against CA Osasuna.
“I think so, it looks like [they are available to start]. But how it is with these kind of things, we have nothing to rush in this department. We just have to make then a decision on who will start, who will come on, things like this and if I think they are ready for 90 minutes then they are ready to start.
If I think we have to take them off earlier then it makes no sense because centre-half is not actually a position where you want to change during a game and so we will see. But both look really good. An intense season is coming up. We will see how we decide that.” [quotes via Liverpoolfc.com]
It is important to note that Klopp will not force the pair back into action, especially in an opening Premier League fixture where Liverpool are viewed as heavy favorites, despite traveling to Carrow Road.
Club-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, recently spoke of his admiration for Dutch international van Dijk:
“He’s a natural leader. He speaks when he needs to speak, he’s dominant, he has a presence. You know when he enters a room. He’s someone you listen to when he speaks. That’s what you want from a leader. A lot of people look up to him.”
Regardless of whether or not van Dijk and Gomez feature against Norwich, their inevitable return will do Liverpool’s chances of bouncing back both in the Premier League and Europe a world of good.
