Lionel Messi speaks out after Manchester City treble

Manchester City completed the treble last weekend.

Manchester City made history this past Saturday when they saw off Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

The Sky Blues beat Inter 1-0 to lift their first-ever Champions League trophy.

And after winning the Premier League and beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final, the Citizens also became only the second English side to complete the treble after Manchester United in 1998/99.

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, is the first manager to complete a treble with two separate clubs.

The first club he did it with was FC Barcelona. And now, the star of that team, Lionel Messi, has spoken out.

Responding to City’s victory over Inter, Messi revealed he regularly speaks to his former manager and labelled Guardiola the ‘best coach in the world’, though insisted that was a tag he deserved regardless of the result in Istanbul:

“I’m very happy with what he’s achieved, the last Champions League. He’s the best coach in the world although, for me, he didn’t have to win this Champions League to prove it, but [it is] an achievement he deserves.”
