Lionel Messi hits out at Dutch star following Argentina’s win over Netherlands

Argentina booked their spot in the World Cup semi-finals on Friday.

Argentina started the tie the better of the two sides and took the lead after 36 minutes with Lionel Messi providing the assist for Nahuel Molina.

Messi then stepped up from 12 yards in the second half to double Argentina’s lead.

The game appeared to be over from there, but Louis van Gaal opted to change to a 4-4-2 and bring on some bigger players in order to start hitting long balls.

This worked to an extent as substitute Wout Weghorst scored in the 83rd minute and then again 11 minutes into second half injury time.

The two sides could not be separated in extra time, with Argentina going on to win the shootout.

Despite progressing on the day, Lionel Messi was fired up post-match.

Messi also hit back at Louis van Gaal after the hard-fought win as he added: “Van Gaal says that they play good football, but what he did was put on tall people and hit long balls.”

Messi was not done there, though, and also had some choice words for the referee on the day: “I don’t want to talk about the referee because you can’t be honest. If you talk they sanction you, FIFA must think about it, they can’t put a referee like that for these instances, they can’t put a referee who isn’t up to the task.”
