Joao Cancelo had been a key figure for Manchester City for several years, playing key roles in their recent domestic success.
So, when Cancelo left Manchester City on loan for Bayern Munich in January, it was a shock to say the least.
The full-back’s exit has made City a weaker side in the midst of a title challenge. As a result, many people expected something to have happened behind the scenes to cause such as a surprising transfer.
However, Cancelo himself has now opened up on leaving Manchester City and put to bed the rumours that he had a fight with Pep Guardiola:
“It’s a lie that I had a fight with [Pep] Guardiola, a complete lie. I didn’t feel important to the team in recent games. I spoke to the coach and he agreed. I, the coach and club decided I had to leave, that it was the best option for me.
“I like new opportunities and have nothing against Manchester City. I took the step to reach the level I wanted to. I became the player I am and I’m very grateful to Pep and the club. They gave everything to me and my family and I’ll never forget it.”
He was hooked at half-time as Bayern went on to pick up a 1-0 win in Paris.
