Arsenal have confirmed that they have extended the contract of popular midfielder Mohamed Elneny for another season as he looks to recover from injury.
The Gunners, currently top of the Premier League, saw the Egyptian’s season ended with a knee injury sustained in training, and Elneny was set to be a free agent this summer after seven years with the club.
However, Arsenal have opted to extend his contract for a further year in a bid to allow the 32-year-old to complete his rehabilitation and return to full fitness, though he is seemingly unlikely to feature too much for the first team.
The arrival of Jorginho effectively replaced Elneny in the pecking order, while the Gunners are also keen on adding another midfielder to their ranks this summer, with Declan Rice thought to be their no.1 target.

Nonetheless, the decision to keep a popular player on low wages will undoubtedly go down well both with his teammates and with the Arsenal faithful.
“I’m so happy, I love this club and our supporters so much and I’ll give everything to help us be the best we can be, every day I’m here.” Elneny told Arsenal.com.
Should Arsenal continue on their current trajectory and lift the Premier League trophy come the end of the season, Elneny will be eligible for a medal having made five appearances in the English top flight before injury curtailed his season.
