Morgan Rogers completes £117m Chelsea transfer as Arsenal miss out on Aston Villa midfielder

Chelsea have signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m on a six-year deal after the England midfielder reportedly turned down Arsenal to work with new Blues head coach Xabi Alonso.

The Midlands club confirmed their star man’s departure in a statement on social media, saying: “Aston Villa can confirm that Morgan Rogers has completed a permanent transfer to Chelsea.

“Since joining from Middlesbrough in 2024, the midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence, helping Villa to lift the UEFA Europa League last term, scoring the third goal in the final in Istanbul.

“During his time at the club, he also earned his first senior England caps, representing his country at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the Three Lions finished third.

“A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career. He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories.”

Speaking for the first time as a Chelsea player, Rogers added: “I’m so excited; for me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.

“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Morgan Rogers stats: Aston Villa, Middlesbrough

Born in Halesowen in the West Midlands, Rogers spent nine years at nearby West Bromwich Albion’s academy before joining Manchester City, winning the 2019/20 FA Youth Cup.

He had loan spells with Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool and then joined Middlesbrough permanently, scoring seven goals to help Boro finish eighth in the Championship and reach the EFL Cup semi-finals in 2023/24.

Villa signed Rogers for an initial £8 million in February 2024 and he swiftly established himself as an important figure for Unai Emery’s team, proceeding to contribute 14 goals and 15 assists across all competitions in 2024/25, including a hat-trick in a Champions League victory against Celtic.

Those numbers earned Rogers the Villa and PFA Young Player of the Year honours, and he added 14 goals and 11 assists in 2025/26, winning the Europa League Player of the Season award as Villa lifted the trophy.

No English player bettered Rogers’ total of 84 attempts at goal in the 2025/26 Premier League, while no midfielder eclipsed his tally of 32 on target.

His goals-vs-expected-goals total of 3.22 was also the eighth-highest of any player in the division, helped by Rogers’ talent for spectacular strikes.

Morgan Rogers England career: World Cup starter

An England regular at youth level between the ages of 14 and 21, Rogers made his senior debut away to Greece in the Nations League in November 2024.

Lee Carsley, who was interim England head coach following Gareth Southgate’s exit, gave Rogers his bow and current boss Thomas Tuchel has continued to pick him since becoming Southgate’s permanent successor at the start of 2025.

Rogers scored his only Three Lions goal in a 3-0 friendly win at home to Wales in October 2025 and was called up for the World Cup 2026, appearing in seven of England’s eight matches at the finals.

A full World Cup debutant against Panama during the group stage, Rogers played throughout England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina – crossing for Anthony Gordon to open the scoring – and third-place play-off win over France.
