Preview for Bayern Munich v Arsenal
Two former Manchester City colleagues, two league-winning managers, and one of the biggest games of the Champions League league phase. Vincent Kompany and Mikel Arteta go head-to-head again at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, with Bayern Munich and Arsenal both chasing a place in the top eight.
Arsenal arrive with a perfect European record and plenty of momentum. Noni Madueke’s goal gave them a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, making it three wins in a row in all competitions, and they have won both of their Champions League games without conceding, beating Napoli 1-0 and Lille 3-0.
Bayern’s European campaign has been more eventful. They hammered Bodø/Glimt 5-0 on matchday one, but they were held 3-3 by Norwegian champions Viking last week in a remarkable game. Bayern went 2-0 down, came back to lead 3-2, and then conceded a late equaliser after Michael Olise was sent off.
Kompany’s side responded in style on Saturday, thrashing RB Leipzig 6-1 in the Bundesliga. They remain unbeaten in all 10 of their games in all competitions this season, and they have scored 25 goals in their last six matches. Bayern have also scored in each of their last 23 Champions League games.
The two sides know each other well. Arsenal won the most recent meeting 3-1 at the Emirates in last season’s league phase, but Bayern have a superb record in Munich. They have won five of their seven Champions League games against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena, and they won the last three meetings there.

Team News for Bayern Munich v Arsenal
Olise is the big absentee for Bayern. He was booked twice in the space of a minute against Viking, once for a cynical foul and then for throwing the ball into Zlatko Tripić’s face, and his red card carries a one-match ban.
Olise has 14 goal involvements in his first 10 games this season, with nine goals and five assists.
Kompany has to choose between teenager Lennart Karl and former Arsenal academy player Serge Gnabry to replace him on the right. Jamal Musiala (thigh) is not expected back, and Manuel Neuer is a doubt with a foot problem. If Neuer doesn’t make it, Jonas Urbig will continue in goal.
Alphonso Davies, Jonathan Tah and Karl could all be recalled after starting on the bench at the weekend.
For Arsenal, Martín Zubimendi is fit again after his ankle injury and was on the bench at the City Ground. Arteta made five changes for the Forest game, so more changes are likely, with Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres both pushing to start.
Arsenal are still without William Saliba, Christos Tzolis and Piero Hincapié.
Expected line-ups for Bayern Munich v Arsenal

Arsenal: Raya; Timber, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Lewis-Skelly; Saka, Ødegaard, Madueke; Havertz
Stats for Bayern München v Arsenal

- The English club were victorious in the last fixture, 3-1 in London in last season’s league phase. Jurriën Timber, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli scored for Arsenal, Bayern’s goal coming from Lennart Karl.
- That ended Bayern’s five-match unbeaten run against Arsenal (W4 D1).
- The German club’s home record against Arsenal is W5 D1 L1, most recently recording a 1-0 win in the 2023/24 quarter-final second leg (3-2 aggregate). Arsenal’s only win in Munich was a 2-0 success in the 2012/13 round of 16 second leg, a tie they lost on away goals (3-3 aggregate).
- Bayern are unbeaten in six home matches against English visitors (W5 D1), beating Chelsea 3-1 on Matchday 1 last season.
- Arsenal have won only one of their last eight away matches in Germany (D2 L5), drawing 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen on their last visit, in last season’s round of 16 first leg (3-1 aggregate).
- Home and away, the Gunners have four wins and six defeats in their last 12 games against German teams.
Prediction for Bayern Munich v Arsenal
Olise’s absence is a major blow for Bayern with the France midfielder arguably the best player in the world on current form. But Arsenal were sluggish at Forest on Sunday and still seem some way short of their best.
