Despite criticism, Bruno Fernandes set a Manchester United record in win over Atalanta

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes set a club record during his side’s showdown with Atalanta on Wednesday, it has been revealed.

Ronaldo makes the difference

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co. of course turned their attentions back towards matters on the continent a little less than 24 hours ago.

After getting their post-international break endeavours off to an altogether concerning start, en route to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester at the weekend, the Red Devils welcomed Atalanta to Old Trafford, eyeing a bounce-back result.

With 45 minutes on the clock, however, United looked well on their way to yet another deserved loss.

Strikes on the part of both Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral saw Atalanta carry a two-goal lead into the break, looking in firm control of the action.

But Manchester United, who last time out required a last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo effort to overcome Villarreal, can simply never be counted out.

In turn, it did not come as too much of a shock when, after Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire pulled the hosts back on level terms over the course of the 2nd-half, that man Ronaldo came to the rescue once more.

A wonderful header just inside the closing ten minutes ultimately proved enough to guide Solskjaer’s men to all three points, and top spot in Champions League Group F:

Bruno brilliance

Despite their eventual victory over Atalanta, a whole host of United’s stars were nevertheless singled out for criticism on the back of the full-time whistle on Wednesday.

One such player was Bruno Fernandes, who, before the introduction of Paul Pogba, toiled in his efforts to exert any sort of influence on proceedings.

As outlined above, though, owing to his stellar showing over the course of the 2nd-half, the Portuguese, surprisingly, set a Red Devils Champions League record.

As revealed by statistician OptaJoe, Fernandes carved out no fewer than eight goalscoring opportunities over the course of the 90 minutes last night, the most managed by a Man United player in a single CL fixture since such records began:
