Conor Gallagher’s defiant comments show why he could be Chelsea’s next Frank Lampard

Conor Gallagher’s defiant comments show why he could be Chelsea’s next Frank Lampard

Manchester City 0 – Crystal Palace 2

Crystal Palace would take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon.

In truth, though Palace have proven a hard side to beat under Patrick Vieira, nobody was really expecting them to pick up a win against the current Premier League champions.

Yet, when all was said and done in Manchester, this is exactly what the Eagles managed.

Wilfried Zaha would fire the visitors into the lead after just six minutes.

Man City were then reduced to 10 men shortly before the break, when Aymeric Laporte was sent off.

And, to cap off an excellent afternoon’s work, Conor Gallagher made it 2-0 after 88 minutes.

Palace had countered but were unable to find a clear opening until Gallagher made a marauding run into the box from deep:

Gallagher shows how he can be Chelsea’s new Lampard

With Gallagher a central midfielder and his parent club coming in the form of Chelsea, it is easy to see why some may compare him to Frank Lampard.

His goal against Man City was a textbook Lampard effort, bursting into the box from a deep midfield role to catch the defence off guard and score.

And such efforts evidently come naturally to the youngster, who, speaking after City, revealed that he actually defied his manager’s instructions by opting to burst forward to kill the game off:

“I should not have even been in the box. The boss told me to sit in, but I just had a feeling I could get a chance, and thankfully I was able to finish it.

“When you come to Manchester City you naturally defend more and work a little bit harder. We were brilliant defensively.”

Of course, with his side only 1-0 up at the time, this move could easily have backfired on Gallagher, but it also highlights the fact that the Chelsea talent possesses the kind of instincts to be a similar player to Frank Lampard.
