Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Premier League match preview

Matchweek 12 of the Premier League dishes up a London derby as Chelsea host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Chelsea were involved in an incredible Champions League group stage match against Ajax in midweek. Chelsea fought back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with goals from Jorginho (2), Cesar Azpilicueta and Reece James. Azpilicueta then thought he had scored a match-winner but the goal was ruled out by VAR.

The match was filled with drama. There were two penalties, both scored by Jorginho, while Tammy Abraham and Kepa Arrizabalaga both scored own goals. Ajax finished the match with nine men after receiving two red cards at the same time.

Last weekend Chelsea beat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road. Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic netted for Frank Lampard’s side, who remain fourth in the table. Chelsea are level on 23 points with third-place Leicester but have a vastly inferior goal difference to the Foxes.

Crystal Palace slipped to ninth following last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at home to Leicester. The Eagles have conceded two goals in each of their last three and are looking for their first win in four matches.

Chelsea’s home form in the league has been relatively poor, with just two wins from their five matches at Stamford Bridge. Palace have won two, drawn one and lost two of their five matches on the road so far.

Chelsea have won 14 and lost 4 of their 20 Premier League meetings against Palace, including each of their last three. N’Golo Kante scored the only goal of the game in their most recent meeting at Selhurst Park in December 2018.

Chelsea team news vs Crystal Palace

Mason Mount is a doubt after he picked up an ankle injury in Chelsea’s chaotic draw on Tuesday night. Callum Hudson-Odoi could be handed a start in Mount’s absence.

Jorginho, who scored a brace in midweek, will serve a one-match suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards domestically.

N’Golo Kante was an unused substitute on Tuesday and could complete his comeback from injury. Kante should be partnering Mateo Kovacic in midfield, with Ross Barkley still doubtful.

Marcos Alonso will face competition from Reece James and Emerson Palmieri for the left-back starting berth. Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma are expected to start together at centre-back although Andreas Christensen provides Lampard with an option for rotation.

Antonio Rudiger and former Palace loanee Ruben Loftus-Cheek are sidelined.

Crystal Palace team news vs Chelsea

Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is a minor doubt following a head collision but he is expected to face his former side.

James McArthur and Cheikhou Kouyate are further doubts in central midfield, which could hand opportunities to Max Meyer and James McCarthy.

Jeffrey Schlupp could start out wide as Andros Townsend remains a doubt. Connor Wickham and Mamadou Sakho are both sidelined.

Patrick van Aanholt will start at full-back against his former club.
