Chelsea boss Lampard provides latest on midfield quartet before Sheffield United

Frank Lampard has this evening moved to provide a fitness update on his squad, ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming meeting with Sheffield United.

The Blues will return to action tomorrow evening, in a Premier League meeting with the Blades.

The Bramall Lane clash is set to come as a crucial one for Chelsea, with the capital giants in the thick of the battle for a top-4 berth.

Their previous outing, a tense 3-2 win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, saw Lampard’s outfit leapfrog Leicester City into 3rd in the Premier League table.

With both the Foxes and Manchester United breathing down the necks of the Pensioners, though, one slip up could prove extremely costly.

And Sheffield United, for their part, are no doubt set to provide a stern test to their favoured opponents tomorrow evening, with the Blades harbouring European ambitions of their own, and fresh off the back of a crucial last-gasp victory over Wolves.

As such, ahead of what is set to prove another major test of his side’s mettle in 24 hours’ time, Frank Lampard has this evening provided an update on his squad.

The Chelsea boss, speaking in a pre-match press conference, was drawn on a whole host of topics, though the main focus surrounded his options in the middle of the park this weekend.

First, Lampard confirmed the disappointing news that youngster Billy Gilmour, who had emerged as a key contributor for the Blues of late, has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a knee issue:

‘Gilmour has had an operation on his knee this morning. He will be out for between three or four months, unfortunately. We are disappointed here and Billy is himself. I spoke to him at length, giving him support.’

In a further blow for the Londoners, Lampard also went on to reveal that N’Golo Kante is set to miss out at Bramall Lane, too.

Mateo Kovacic, on the other hand, is in contention to feature, having recovered from an Achilles injury.

Finally, when pressed on the potential participation of Jorginho, who has majorly struggled for game-time since the season’s resumption last month, the Chelsea boss was keen to keep his cards close to his chest:

‘We will see, in terms of selection, but I don’t think there is a point to prove.’
