Can Timo Werner inspire Romelu Lukaku to reignite Chelsea career?

Chelsea strikers and poor form - a formula that, unfortunately for Blues fans, has gone hand in hand for many, many years now.

Andriy Shevchenko, Fernando Torres, Gonzalo Higuain and most recently, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

All players who have bagged plenty of goals for other clubs but, when it came time to perform at Chelsea, they, for the most part, struggled.

Of course, the latter two on that list remain at Chelsea, with Werner having been signed from RB Leipzig and Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.

Lukaku is in his first season back at Chelsea and to say it has not gone well would be something of an understatement.

The £97.5m-pound man has angered fans with his comments on Inter and seriously struggled in front of goal.

Can Werner inspire Lukaku?

As for Timo Werner, though a small sample size, the German finally looks to be finding his feet in England.

Werner scored a brace vs Southampton in Chelsea’s last league game, scored one and assisted one vs Real Madrid and then provided one assist – it should have been two but Lukaku missed a big chance – vs Crystal Palace.

Now, with Werner finally coming good and Lukaku still struggling, Thomas Tuchel has been asked if the former RB Leipzig man can be an inspiration to Lukaku, to which the Chelsea boss responded: “I don’t think he needs inspiration.

“What he needs is maybe that one moment, one spark. I told you he would normally be a natural starter against Crystal Palace because of the amount Kai Havertz played recently and the amount of physicality Kai gives to the matches.

"After a period of injury, he (Lukaku) doesn't have the stiffness and fitness for matches. I don’t point the finger at him. It’s just a fact. It's not even his fault. It is just like this in the crucial time of the season that you need a certain rhythm. If you compare our matches and see the difference of Brentford, Real Madrid and then Southampton, Real Madrid – in a short period of time you see the huge amount of effort we put in to become again a winning team.

"This is what we need. It goes from there and then Romelu should have maybe had a goal against Real Madrid, missing the luck. It’s an option that he starts. If he starts we need him physically. Maybe he cannot play 90 minutes, maybe to put it all out there for 60 minutes.”
