A sign of things to come? Erling Haaland matches Sergio Aguero’s Man City record with opening day brace vs West Ham

The Norwegian wasted little time in sending a crystal clear message to his doubters


Manchester City summer signing Erling Haaland has, on Sunday, etched his name into the history books of the Premier League champions.

Pep Guardiola’s troops, of course, were back in action a short time ago.

After watching predicted title rivals Liverpool drop two points in their own Premier League opener 24 hours ago, City made the trip to the London Stadium, hopeful of taking full advantage.

And, when all was said and done, emerge with all three points is precisely what the Sky Blues managed.

A dominant display ultimately culminated in a 2-0 triumph on the part of the evening’s visitors, who got the defence of their title off to a typically professional start.

And it was that man Haaland who proved the undisputed star of the show.

The young hitman, heavily criticised for his display in last weekend’s Community Shield showpiece, went on to bag both of City’s goals versus West Ham, amid a fine all-round showing.

And, in the process, the latest big-money addition to Guardiola’s ranks secured for himself a piece of club history.

As per statisticians Opta, Haaland today became just the 2nd player to ever find the net twice on his Premier League debut for Man City.

The first? A certain Sergio Aguero...
