Preview for Leeds v Newcastle
Leeds will hope to bounce back from their capitulation at Chelsea when they face Newcastle at Elland Road on Monday night.
The West Yorkshiremen led 2-0 in their EFL Cup tie at Stamford Bridge and were seemingly cruising into the fourth round only to buckle under a Blues barrage that saw Chelsea emerge 6-3 winners.
Boss Daniel Farke made several changes but insists it was the right call.
He said: “It was a crazy game. It happens sometimes, especially in the early round of the cup when there are many changes. Football games sometimes develop in this way and overall there were very tight statistics. It was tough to take because we wanted to go to the next round but I think it was a risk we had to take because some players needed rest and some needed important minutes. We have already drawn a line under it and we have bigger games ahead.”
Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle have made a solid start with five points from three games, albeit they were a touch fortunate to claim a draw against Bournemouth in their last Premier League outing.
Farke said: “They’re definitely difficult to beat. They’re very dangerous, especially out of counter-attacks, and of course have high quality players as well.
“So it will be a difficult task, but we have a few days to prepare and we want to be prepared in the manner that we are top, on it, and try and win as many points as possible.”
Newcastle edged past Millwall in the EFL Cup in midweek to maintain Jaissle’s unbeaten start since replacing Eddie Howe in the Magpies hot-seat.
The German said: ”We are happy with the start we have had. It definitely isn’t normal after such a short amount of time together, but we want to continue that journey. We are ambitious but we are also realistic.
“We haven’t had much training time but I’m impressed with how open-minded the players are, how fast they learn and how committed they are to what we are doing. It is a huge advantage if you already have these fundamentals in place. It makes me happy.”

Joe Rodon remains sidelined for Leeds but several players left out at Chelsea will return to the starting XI.
Newcastle defender Amar Dedic limped off against Millwall and is a doubt. Lewis Miley could deputise at right-back. New signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo has trained all week in a bid to build his fitness but is likely to start on the bench once again.
