Moyes apologises after dismal West Ham display at Chelsea

David Moyes

West Ham boss David Moyes has apologised to fans after the club’s poor display in the 5-0 loss to Chelsea on Sunday.

The Hammers looked like they were already on the beach when they travelled to Stamford Bridge and found themselves 3-0 down by half-time.

A second-half Nicolas Jackson brace further compounded Moyes’ misery and his future looks to lie away from the East London club.

Jarrod Bowen had the only real chance for the visitors, striking the crossbar at 1-0 down but West Ham never really threatened after that.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moyes said: “The fans have been great but I feel bad for them.

“I don’t normally have teams who get beaten like this but we are lacking some ingredients – mental toughness and leadership to get better results, or at least not get hammered.

“The fans played their part and I can only say I’m really sorry for how it played out.

“We’ve had too many games this season where we haven’t shown any toughness, togetherness, leadership, or taken ownership of the performance.

“I’m the manager so I take ownership of that but sometimes the players have to take responsibility as well.”

West Ham have now conceded 10 goals in their last two away matches having lost 5-2 at Crystal Palace in recent weeks.

Speculation about Moyes’ future remains prevalent in the media and former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is a hot favourite to take over from the Scotsman this summer.

The 61-year-old will always have a special place in the hearts of Hammers fans after guiding them to Europa Conference League glory last season, but there has been a clear decline this season.
