Turkey have not qualified for a World Cup for two decades and their hopes of being at Qatar 2022 suffered a real setback last month.

First, despite leading 2-0 after half an hour, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Montenegro in İstanbul, conceding a 97th minute free-kick.

Şenol Güneş’ side did then bounce-back, beating minnows Gibraltar 3-0; Halil Dervişoğlu, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Kenan Karaman scoring.

However, on matchday six, the Crescent-stars were demolished 6-1 by Netherlands in Amsterdam; Cengiz Ünder’s 92nd minute tap-in barely a consolation.

That is their biggest competitive defeat since an 8-0 loss to England way back in 1987; Gary Lineker got a hat-trick that day.

Following this embarrassing defeat, given that Turkey also crashed out of Euro 2020 with no points, Güneş was sacked as Head Coach.

Stefan Kuntz has come in as his successor; he lead Germany U21s to three successive Euro Finals, winning the trophy in 2017 and 2021.

But, in his first game in senior international management, he faces a must win game.

Norway meanwhile are just above their hosts coming into this crucial encounter.

Ståle Solbakken’s side held Netherlands to a 1-1 draw last month before back-to-back wins, 2-0 in Latvia and 5-1 against Gibraltar.

However, their talisman Erling Braut Håland, who’s scored 12 times for his country in the last 13 months, will miss this one due to injury.

That is a real blow for the Lions.

In the group standing, Netherlands and Norway have 13 points while Turkey are two points further back.

Remember, the group winners qualify for Qatar 2022 with the runners-up entering the play-offs and third-place suffering elimination.

Thus, this is a vitally important fixture for both nations.

Will either claim three invaluable points at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium?
