Match preview

Two sides with altogether contrasting season goals are set to lock horns at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II in Ligue 1 on Saturday, October 8th.

The clash in question will see relegation-battling Stade de Reims play host to a Paris Saint-Germain outfit who have looked utterly dominant across the French top-flight season to date.

Starting with the former, after battling their way to an altogether credible 12th-placed finish in Ligue 1 last time out, Reims’ efforts to this point in the 2022/23 term have proven less fruitful, to say the least.

Oscar Garcia’s side, all told, have notched just a solitary victory from nine attempts, leaving them 17th, and in the thick of the battle against the drop.

Their post-international break return to action last weekend did see Les Rouges et Blanc avoid a 3rd defeat on the spin, but even that proved altogether morale-sapping, as a potential three-point haul was cut to one with 90 minutes on the clock away to Troyes.

One positive amid an otherwise disappointing season to date has proven the form of Folarin Balogun, but even a 7th Ligue 1 goal on the part of the on-loan Arsenal man is unlikely to prove enough to turn Reims’ form around this weekend.

This comes with Garcia and co. facing a daunting showdown with champions PSG.

Unlike their upcoming hosts, the capital heavyweights have dropped points on just a solitary occasion in 2022/23, in a 1-1 stalemate with AS Monaco back in August.

This momentary stumble aside, Christophe Galiter’s troops have racked up eight wins from nine attempts.

The latest of these came owing to a late winner on the part of Kylian Mbappe last Saturday, enough to guide PSG to a 2-1 downing of OGC Nice at the Parc des Princes.

In turn, though a number of the club’s star performers could well be rested on Saturday, sandwiched between a pair of crunch Champions League meetings with Benfica, we at 101 nevertheless expect Paris Saint-Germain to simply have too much for Reims this weekend.
