Nantes vs Toulouse match preview

It’s Coupe de France Final night in Paris but, given that these two are 12th and 16th in Ligue 1, this isn’t quite the glamour occasion most would’ve predicted.

Nantes though are seeking to retain their title, having beaten Nice 1-0 in last season’s final a year ago.

Only eight clubs have ever retained the Coupe de France: PSG, Marseille, Saint-Étienne, Lille, RC Paris, Red Star, Bordeaux and Nantes themselves in the 2000.

To get to this final, Antoine KombouarĂ©’s team have knocked out three top-flight opponents, ousting Angers on penalties before surprise victories over Lens and Lyon.

La Maison Jaune also featured in the Europa League knockout stages this year, ousted by Juventus, but have not been able to transfer this form in cups into league results.

Les Canaris were held to a 2-2 draw by Troyes on Sunday, leaving them without a win in eight league games, with Nantes therefore down in 16th, above the drop zone on goal difference alone.

Given that Toulouse are nine points above their opponents, they might just come into this final as favourites.

To get here, le Téfécé have seen off Lannion, Ajaccio, Reims, Rodez and Annecy, with this just the second time they’ve ever featured in the final, defeating Angers in a nine-goal thriller 66 years ago.

12 months ago, Philippe Montanier’s team were crowned Ligue 2 champions, but are now just 90 minutes away from being cup winners, and returning to Europe for the first time since 2009.

When these two last met Nantes ran out 3-1 winners at Stade de la Beaujoire all the way back in August.

Who will be celebrating an historic Coupe de France triumph at Stade de France?
